System
You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The pendant woke first.
Aurora felt it through two
layers of wool, a slow warm
throb
against her sternum, a coal breathing under cloth.
She halted on the deer
track.
Richmond Park lay grey around
her, the solstice morning drowned in fog, and between two oaks ahead the air had torn. A vertical seam of shimmer, no wider than a door, bent the fog around its edges. "You see it now."
Isolde crossed the frost barefoot
and left no prints. "The Veil wears thin today. Thinner than it will wear all year."
Nyx poured out of a
holly bush's shadow and unfolded to their full height, a head and more above her, violet eyes dimmed against the daylight. "Once we cross, Hel will know me differently. Do not be alarmed." "Differently how?" "You will see." "That's not an answer." "It is the only honest one."
Isolde tilted her head at
the seam, silver hair sliding off her shoulder. "Step through before the fog turns. A door this thin does not stay open for the slow."
Aurora pressed the pendant through
her jumper. Warm, and warming.
She went first because no
one else
was going
to.
The seam took her the
way cold water takes a diver. One step: frozen grass, wet bark, fog. The next: heat.
It rolled over her face
and hands, dense as a blanket pulled from an oven, and every inch of it was seasoned. Ripe fruit. Woodsmoke. Sugar burnt to amber. Fat dripping on coals somewhere, and under it all a green sweetness, crushed leaves, fermentation.
Cardamom, she realised, and something
darker beneath it, star anise maybe. Two years of deliveries for Yu-Fei's kitchen had taught her nose more than four years of Pre-Law ever taught her head.
Her stomach clenched hard enough
to hurt.
She had eaten breakfast an
hour ago.
The sky was the colour
of the inside of a whisky glass. No sun.
The light came from the
air itself, warm and even, shadowless in a way that made the ground
look
painted. She stood on a rise, on a road of packed red earth, and below her the land fell away in terraces, and every terrace was a vineyard, and the vines were black, and the grapes were not. Grapes the size of plums, translucent, lit from inside. Rows of small lanterns strung on black wire, breathing light in slow pulses. Some gold. Some deep red. Some a blue she had no name for. Behind her the seam folded shut with a sound like a book closing. Nyx came through last, and the light of Dymas took hold of them. Their edges sharpened. The smoke-drift blur she had grown used to in London hardened into definition: long limbs, a high-collared shape like a judge's robe cut from darkness, hands with too many joints. In this light they cast a shadow. It pointed the wrong way. "You
look
—" "Solid." Nyx flexed one impossible hand. "Hel remembers what I was made of. Earth forgot." Isolde stood with her face tipped to the amber sky, breathing in slow sips, lavender eyes half closed. "Gluttony. The realm that feeds. Remember the first law, both of you. Nothing enters your mouth. Nothing. No matter how it asks." "How it asks?" "Everything here wants to be eaten." Nyx's
whisper
curled through the warm air. "It has had a
very
long time to learn how to be persuasive." They walked. The road switchbacked down through the terraces, and the deeper they went, the louder the valley grew.
Somewhere below, pans clattered, knives
knocked on boards, a hundred voices sang in rounds in a language that slid off the ear like oil off water. Under the song, drums. Under the drums, a
pulse
too slow to be a drum and too deep to be a heart. A vine turned to watch her pass.
She caught it from the
corner of her eye, a slow deliberate rotation, the way a dog lifts its head at a scent. The nearest cluster of grapes swivelled towards her, each little lantern tilting on its stem, the light inside them brightening, warm and interested.
Her hand found the Fae
blade at her hip. Cold. Colder than the solstice morning had been, colder than anything had a right to be in this heat. "Walk on." Isolde did not
look
back. "It is only curious. Curiosity is free here. It is the appetite that costs." "And if I pick one?" "Then you will want to taste it. And if you taste it, you will want more. And what you owe, the realm collects." A pause, light as falling ash. "Belphegor's kitchens are full of those who only wanted one bite." The kitchens came into view at the third terrace, long open-air stalls of dark stone, chimneys breathing pale smoke. At the nearest stall a man stood alone, turning skewers over coals that burned blue at the heart. Human. No mistaking it: the rolled sleeves, the East End tattoo on his forearm. Except the tattoo moved. Aurora watched letters crawl around his wrist like ants circling a honeypot, a signature rewriting itself without end. "Contract ink." Nyx's breath stirred her hair. "Do not stare." The man looked up. Pale eyes, sweat-bright face, a smile with nothing behind it. "First visit." Not a question.
He flicked a glance at
Aurora's hands. "Keep those in your pockets, love. Rule of the realm. Everything in Dymas wants to be tasted, and half of it wants to taste you back." "You sound like London." "Lambeth. Died in a kitchen fire, 1987."
He turned the skewers
. Fat hissed on the coals, and the smell reached into Aurora's skull and rang something there, some deep animal bell. "Woke up here with a knife in my hand and a contract round my arm. Could be worse. I could be the produce." The smile never moved. "Mind the fig trees at the bottom of the slope. They ripen when you
look
at them, and they do love an audience." "Isolde—" "Ask him nothing more." Isolde's voice stayed gentle. "Answers are also food here, and he has already fed us twice." The chef's smile widened by a degree. "Clever fae. Off you go, then. The bells will ring soon, and you don't want to be hungry when the bells ring." The fig trees stood exactly where he had promised, a small orchard of them, and the chef had not lied. The fruit swelled as Aurora's gaze crossed it, skins tightening, splitting with a sound like knuckles cracking, syrup welling out of the seams and crawling down the bark in slow amber threads. The nearest fig turned its split side towards her like a mouth mid-word.
She put her hands in
her pockets and walked faster. Past the orchard the road levelled, and the valley opened, and Aurora stopped walking. A river of dark wine ran the length of the valley floor, slow as cooling glass, and barges moved on it with no visible crew, their lanterns unlit because the river gave off its own dim red glow. Beyond the river, a table. She understood it in pieces, because her eyes refused it whole: a cloth of white linen, candelabra tall as oaks, chairs the size of cottages, plate after plate after plate marching into a haze of steam and amber light until the table simply stopped being a table and became a horizon. At the far end of it, a palace rose in stacked tiers, chimneys standing over it like a burnt forest, each one breathing a different-coloured smoke. Bells sounded somewhere in that haze, unhurried, enormous. The vine-lanterns along the terraces brightened in answer, row after row, a slow wave of gold rolling down the valley walls. Against her chest, the Heartstone had settled into a steady
pulse
, warm as a held hand. "You stare, child of the dawn." "I'm allowed." Aurora could not pull her eyes off the table, off the smoke, off the light moving through the grapes like something breathing in its sleep. Her
stomach
ached. Her mouth watered. Every instinct she owned
was arguing
with every other one. "It's the most beautiful place I've ever wanted to run from." "Hold on to that wanting." Isolde's lavender eyes reflected the valley, and for once there was no riddle in her face at all. "It is the only compass that works down here."
