<nc-section data-title="Version 1: A Warm Welcome" data-color="red"> Frederick had barely swung down from Thunder's saddle in the stable yard when a broad-shouldered man in a polished breastplate strode out to meet him, a smile breaking through his grizzled beard. "You must be Frederick," the knight said, clasping the young squire's hand in a firm, calloused grip. "I am Sir Roland. I've been expecting you since dawn." Frederick hastily bowed. "It is an honor, sir. I hope I haven't kept you waiting." "Not at all, lad. A good squire arrives when the road allows — and a better one sees to his horse first." Roland nodded approvingly as Frederick loosened Thunder's girth. "Come. Show me how you settle him, and then I'll show you where you'll sleep, eat, and — if the gods are kind — learn to stay alive." </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 2: A Stern Test" data-color="green"> The stable yard was almost empty when Frederick led Thunder in, still dusty from the road. He did not see the tall figure standing in the shadow of the hayloft until the man spoke. "You're late." Frederick turned and found himself facing a knight in blackened mail, arms crossed, grey eyes sharp as drawn steel. "Sir Roland?" he ventured. "I am," Roland said. "And you are the squire who thinks a castle will wait for him." He walked a slow circle around Thunder, noting the foam at the horse's mouth and the loose strap on Frederick's pack. "You rode him hard, boy, and checked nothing before you dismounted." Frederick's face burned. "I — I was eager to arrive, sir." "Eagerness gets horses lamed and men killed." Roland stopped before him, and though his voice softened by a fraction, it did not warm. "Unsaddle him properly. Brush him down. Then report to me at the training yard. Your lessons begin now." </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 3: A Mysterious Warning" data-color="blue"> Frederick was brushing the road dust from Thunder's coat when he realized he was not alone in the stables. A knight stood beside the last stall, one gloved hand resting on the door, watching him in silence. "You have your father's look," the man said at last. Frederick straightened, brush forgotten in his hand. "You knew my father, sir?" "Aye, once. Before the dragon wars ended — before everyone believed they had ended." The knight stepped into the lantern light, revealing a long scar down his cheek and a crest of a silver tower on his cloak. "I am Sir Roland, and I asked the lord of this castle for you by name." "For me? Why?" Roland glanced toward the darkening sky beyond the stable doors. "Because Thunder did not shy when he passed the old stones on the road, and neither did you. That tells me you may be exactly the squire I need. Groom your horse well, Frederick. Tomorrow, I will tell you why." </nc-section>
