You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The tear hung above the bracken like a heat mirage trapped in December air. Rory had felt the pendant go warm a mile back, at the park gates. Now it burned against her sternum. She fished it out from under her jumper. The crimson stone pulsed, steady as a heartbeat, throwing a red smear across her palm. "The solstice leans on the seam." Isolde stood ahead of them in the frost, silver hair loose, bare feet leaving nothing behind her. Not a print. Not a bent blade of grass. "Tonight it bends. Tomorrow it may break, or mend. Bend is better." "That's your idea of a straight answer?" "It is the answer the seam gave me." Nyx gathered themselves at Rory's shoulder, violet eyes the only fixed points in a body that kept forgetting its edges. "I have crossed between realms once before." Their voice arrived like wind through a cracked window. "It unmade me. Forgive me if I do not hurry." "Stay in my shadow where you can," Rory said. "If there are shadows in there." Isolde lifted one hand. "Three laws, child of Cardiff. Eat nothing. Thank nothing. Give your name to nothing that asks, and in that place, everything asks." Then she stepped into the shimmer and folded out of the world. Rory looked at Nyx. Nyx looked at Rory. She grabbed a fistful of living dark — it held, cool and solid as river stone — and walked through. Cold punched the air out of her. Pressure squeezed her skull. For one stretched second she heard her own blood, and beneath it, chewing. Wet, patient, enormous chewing, as if the seam itself were tasting her on the way past. Then her boots sank into something soft, and the sky was amber. Not sunset amber. Not any sky she had a name for. The colour of honey held to a lamp, sourceless, the same in every direction. No sun. No shadow. Her feet stood in a pool of nothing on moss that sprang back like bread dough and swallowed every footfall. Beside her, Nyx made a sound she had never heard from them. A fraying. "There's no dark." Their edges smoked off in thin ribbons. "Nothing to hold me together. I am a drawing rubbed thin." Rory shrugged off her coat and threw it over their shoulders. It sank into them, half swallowed. "Borrow mine." "Borrowed dark," they whispered, and pulled the coat's shadow around themselves like a cloak. It held. Barely. The smell hit her next. Roast meat and caramelised sugar. Smoke threaded with cinnamon. Fruit gone soft and ripe in the sun, except there was no sun. Underneath it all, a copper note, coins or blood, she couldn't decide which. Vines ran in rows down the slope on trellises of black iron twisted into antlers, into reaching hands. Grapes hung off them the size of plums, skins translucent, each one holding a coal of light at its core. Bees big as her thumb drifted between them, four-winged, drunk, bumping into her hair and apologising in a hum too low for any bee. "Don't touch the fruit." Isolde was already moving down the row. "Wasn't going to." "You were. Your hand was reaching." It had been. Rory shoved both hands in her pockets. They walked. The vines hummed a single low note that she felt in her molars. Now and then a grape split under its own weight, and the whole row sighed, a sound like a man sinking into a hot bath. Her stomach cramped. She had eaten a meal deal on the train, hours ago, and her body behaved as though she'd fasted for a week. Saliva flooded her mouth at the smell of the smoke. They came to a stream running dark and slow as oil. Wine. It filled the air over it with a warmth that made her eyes water. A stone bridge crossed it, and on the far bank a man turned a spit over a pit of blue coals. He wore chef's whites gone grey at the seams. A union jack pin, bent and tarnished, clung to his collar. Around his wrist sat a band of red script, and the letters moved when she stopped watching them directly. He didn't look up from the fire. "You're not bound yet." His voice had a London accent, frayed at the edges. "Walk on. Don't let them seat you. Don't let them plate you anything." "How long have you been here?" The spit kept turning. "I had a restaurant in Shoreditch. I entered a competition. The prize was a contract." A laugh scraped out of him. "I won." Isolde's hand found Rory's elbow and steered her on. "His story is his own. Carry it, don't open it." They climbed. At the crest of the rise, Rory stopped walking. The valley below was a feast the way an ocean is water. Tables ran in spirals down the slope, a mile of them, dressed in cloth that caught the amber light like wet silk. Lanterns the size of weather balloons drifted overhead on long ribbons, small captive moons. Thousands of diners ate and drank and roared, shapes both human and not, and servers moved among them with a glide that had nothing to do with legs. In an arena at the valley's heart, two chefs duelled. Flame leapt from their pans in shapes, serpents, birds, a thing with too many antlers, and the crowd's roar came up the hill in waves. Beyond it all rose a palace of copper domes, its walls studded with oven mouths, chimneys breathing spiced smoke into the amber. "Belphegor's table." Isolde said it the way you'd name a cliff edge. "It's beautiful." Rory's throat ached saying it. "It's beautiful and it's wrong. Like a banquet painted on a coffin lid." "All bait is beautiful. That is the function of bait." Her stomach twisted hard enough to double her over. The smell rolling up from the valley hooked into something behind her navel and pulled. One step toward the tables before Nyx's cold hand closed on her shoulder. "Rory." "I know. I know." She dug in her pocket, found a cereal bar squashed flat from the train, and ate it in three bites, wrapper crackling loud in the humming quiet. The hunger didn't leave. It watched her eat and waited. Isolde pointed down the slope, along the vineyard rows that skirted the arena. "The road out lies past the kitchens. Keep your scarf over your nose. Walk hungry. Walk unthanking. If anything offers, the answer is no, and the answer is never why not." "And if something asks my name?" "Then it has already smelled it on you, and you give it nothing else." They started down. The music swelled as they descended, pipes and a drum with a heartbeat in it, and the crowd rose to its feet for some dish being carried out under a silver dome the size of a car. The roar rolled over the hill. The smell rolled with it. Rory knotted her scarf over her nose, pulled Nyx's borrowed dark closer around them both, and kept walking. Behind them, up the slope, the man from Shoreditch turned his spit over the blue coals. He did not watch them go.
