My horse, a majestic stallion named Thunder, galloped across the open field. The wind whipped through my hair as I rode towards the castle gates. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the stone walls. I could see the banners of the kingdom fluttering in the breeze.

<nc-section data-title="Version 1: The First Lesson" data-color="red"> I drew Thunder to a halt in the stable yard, where a tall man in travel-stained mail stood beside the open doors. A white scar crossed his chin, and his cloak was clasped with a simple iron brooch. He studied me in silence until I dismounted. “Frederick,” he said at last. “I am Sir Roland. You have been placed in my charge.” I straightened and tried to look as though the long ride had not left my legs trembling. His gaze moved past me to Thunder’s lathered flanks. “Your first lesson begins now. A knight’s courage means little if his horse cannot carry him into battle.” He handed me a cloth from a nearby shelf. “Rub him down. Water him. See that he eats before you do.” I swallowed my disappointment and took the cloth. Sir Roland’s stern expression softened by a fraction. “Welcome to the castle, Frederick. At dawn, we shall see what else the road has taught you.” </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 2: A Warm Welcome" data-color="green"> Thunder had scarcely entered the stable yard when a broad-shouldered man stepped forward and caught his bridle. He wore no polished armor, only a green surcoat over a plain wool tunic, and there was hay clinging to one sleeve. “Easy, my friend,” he murmured to the stallion. Then he glanced up at me. “You must be Frederick. I am Sir Roland.” I hurried to dismount and nearly tangled my foot in the stirrup. To my relief, he pretended not to notice. “Yes, I saw your gallop across the field,” he added, a smile twitching beneath his gray mustache. “No, the castle was not in danger of escaping.” A laugh escaped me before I could stop it. Sir Roland took my saddlebags as though they weighed nothing and nodded toward the stable. “Come. We’ll see Thunder settled, then find you some supper. Training can wait until morning. Hunger cannot.” For the first time since leaving home, I felt the tightness beneath my ribs begin to loosen. </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 3: The Watcher by the Stable" data-color="blue"> A single lantern burned beside the stables. Beneath it stood a knight wrapped in a dark cloak, one hand resting on the pommel of his sword. Thunder slowed without my command and gave a nervous snort. “Frederick,” the man said. It was not a question. He stepped into the lanternlight. His face was lean, his eyes pale and watchful. “Sir Roland. I was told to expect you before sunset.” “The road took longer than I thought.” His gaze shifted past me, toward the darkening fields. “Did anything follow you?” “Only my shadow.” “Keep it close, then.” Before I could ask what he meant, a low cry rolled across the hills beyond the western wall. It was too deep for a wolf and too mournful for the wind. Along the stable row, every horse began to stamp. Sir Roland’s fingers tightened around his sword. Then the sound faded, and he turned back to me with a calm that seemed carefully practiced. “Stable your horse, Frederick. Your training begins at dawn.” He paused. “If we are fortunate, it will concern nothing worse than swords.” </nc-section>
