My horse, a majestic stallion named Thunder, galloped across the open field. The wind whipped through my hair as I rode towards the castle gates. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the stone walls. I could see the banners of the kingdom fluttering in the breeze.

<nc-section data-title="Version 1: A Warm Welcome" data-color="red"> By the time Frederick led Thunder into the stable yard, the last light had faded from the castle walls. A broad-shouldered man emerged from beneath the stable awning, his grey cloak fastened with a plain iron brooch. He wore no helm, and his weathered face broke into a smile. “You must be Frederick,” he said. “I am Sir Roland. Welcome to Briarkeep.” Frederick hurriedly bowed, nearly tangling himself in Thunder’s reins. Sir Roland laughed and caught him by the shoulder. “Save the bowing for lords who enjoy it. Here, a steady hand and an honest word will serve you better.” He glanced at the horse, then at the mud spattering Frederick’s boots. “It was a long road?” “Longer than I expected, sir.” “Most worthy roads are.” Sir Roland took Thunder’s reins and passed them to a waiting stable boy. “Come inside. Training can wait until morning. Tonight, you need supper, a warm bed, and perhaps fewer dreams of glory.” Frederick followed him toward the castle, feeling, for the first time since his arrival, that he might truly belong there. </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 2: The Knight’s Test" data-color="green"> A stable door swung open as Frederick dismounted, and a knight in dented armour stepped into the yard. His dark hair was cropped close, and a thin scar crossed his chin. He studied Frederick with such severity that the boy’s prepared greeting vanished from his mind. “Frederick,” the knight said at last. “You’re later than expected.” “The road was muddy, and—” “And yet your horse carried you through it.” The knight held out his hand. “Sir Roland. While you are at Briarkeep, you will answer to me.” Frederick clasped his forearm, trying not to wince at the strength of Roland’s grip. A stable boy approached to take Thunder, but Frederick drew the reins back. “I’ll tend him myself, sir. He’s earned that much.” For the first time, something like approval flickered in Roland’s eyes. “Good. A knight who abandons what serves him will soon abandon those who trust him.” He nodded toward the stalls. “Brush him down, check his hooves, and then find me in the yard. We’ll discover whether you handle a sword as well as you make excuses.” Frederick swallowed. His training, it seemed, had already begun. </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 3: Smoke on the Wind" data-color="blue"> Frederick found Sir Roland waiting beside the stables, half hidden in the blue dusk. The knight’s silver cloak hung loosely from his shoulders, though the evening was warm, and one gloved hand rested on the hilt of his sword. “Welcome to Briarkeep, Frederick,” he said. His voice was courteous, but his eyes kept returning to the dark hills beyond the castle. Frederick bowed. “Thank you, Sir Roland. I’m honoured to serve under you.” “Honour may come later. For now, serve by listening carefully.” Before Frederick could ask what he meant, Thunder shied so violently that the reins tore through his palms. From somewhere beyond the walls came a low, rolling sound—too deep for thunder, too slow for any drum. The torches along the stable eaves bent in a sudden hot wind. Sir Roland’s courtesy vanished. He seized Frederick’s arm and drew him toward the open stall. “Get your horse inside,” he said quietly. “Bar the doors behind you.” Far above them, something enormous passed between the moon and the castle towers. Roland finally looked at Frederick again. “And whatever you hear tonight, do not answer it.” </nc-section>
