The bell above the door chimed as the door opened and closed. Daisy, the chatty blonde server, greeted the newcomer with a wide smile. "Well, well, well. If it isn't my favorite detective." The detective paused, scanning the bakery with his piercing gaze before his eyes finally settled on Daisy. "Hello, Daisy. Just came for a coffee and a cronut." Daisy made a show of placing a porcelain cup and saucer on the counter with a flourish. "Coming right up." She poured the coffee and handed him the cup. "Any updates on the Owens case?" The detective took a sip, narrowing his eyes as he glanced around the bakery. "Slow going, but I think we're getting somewhere. Why do you ask?" Daisy's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Oh, just curious. You know I love a good whodunit. Besides, I heard the widow was in here yesterday, asking about the same batch of scones you are." The detective's interest piqued. "Scones? Which ones?" Daisy leaned in, lowering her voice. "The ones with the raspberry swirl. Alice, the baker, said they were a special order. You know, for a party." She leaned back, a mischievous twinkle in her eye. "She didn't mention who the party was for but said it was a real gripe and a grumble." The detective's fingers drummed against the counter. "The same batch Mrs. Owens tried to replace on the day of her husband's death." Daisy's hands paused in mid-air, her grin fading. "Mrs. Owens? You don't think?" The detective's eyes locked onto Daisy's. "I think it's time we paid Alice another visit."
