Molly tapped her foot impatiently, perched on a rickety park bench across from the brightly decorated community center. Bill, in his usual state of obliviousness, was attempting to rig a pair of pink bunny ears onto his baseball cap. “Bill, seriously? You’re going to walk into a children's party looking like the illegitimate love child of a clown and a rejected Easter bunny?” He squinted at his handiwork, mumbling, “What, you think this is too gaudy? I thought it’d blend in. You know, like, undercover, in plain sight.” “Undercover in plain sight? It’s more like ‘undercover’ as an over-the-hill mascot,” Molly said, shaking her head with exasperation. She pulled out her phone. “Look, it’s nine thirty. They’re supposed to start opening presents in ten minutes. Are you ready?” Bill fumbled with the bunny ears, pulling them off and tossing them into his backpack. “Ready as I'll ever be.” He grinned, a mischievous glint in his eye.
