The air was filled with giggles and squeals from the nearby children’s birthday party. Balloons floated like overgrown jellybeans tethered to tables adorned with colorful tablecloths. In the center of the festivities sat the object of their desire: a heap of presents, wrapped in shiny paper and adorned with curling ribbons. "You sure this is worth it?" Molly whispered, peeking through the hedge to gauge the party's vibe. "I mean, they’re just kids’ presents." Bill adjusted the collar of his nondescript black hoodie, eyeing the same pile with a sort of calculated avarice. "It’s about the principle, Molly. We’re teachin’ 'em a lesson in distribution, sharin’ the wealth, you know?" Molly rolled her eyes, brushing a stray leaf out of her short-cropped hair. "Distribution? Is that what we're calling theft these days?" "Hey, if Robin Hood could do it, so can we," Bill replied with a conspiratorial grin. "Besides, I heard one of those boxes has the new Galactic Commander action figure. That thing is worth a mint on E-Retail." "Didn’t you once say stealing from children was beneath you?" Molly questioned, raising an eyebrow. She pulled back and folded her arms, suppressing a laugh. "Ah, but these aren’t just any kids. These are the offspring of the elite toy magnate, Donnie Phalange," Bill countered, as if it made perfect sense. "It’s like carrying off the spoils of a mini-metropolis." "You're rationalizing again," she said, a smirk playing on her lips. "But okay, genius, what's the plan?" Bill tapped the side of his nose smugly, a gesture that might have seemed clever were it not for the small smudge of dirt on it. "Simple. We blend in, Molly. We go in as party entertainers." Molly widened her eyes, scanning the scene for inspiration. "Right, 'cause two adults crashing a party in the middle of a park won’t raise any red flags. What’s next? We juggle?" "Exactly!" Bill clapped his hands, too loudly for comfort, causing Molly to swat his arm. "You juggle as a distraction, while I make the switch. You know how to juggle, right?" "Depends," she replied thoughtfully, leaning back against the hedge. "If by ‘juggle’ you mean ‘freak out and drop everything,’ then yes." “Perfect!” Bill exclaimed, eyes glinting with mischief. "Your ‘routine’ will be so terrible, they’ll have no choice but to watch." "This is going to go terribly wrong," Molly predicted, but the corners of her mouth turned up despite herself. "Alright, let’s get on with it… Mr. Robin Hood." They both moved with stealth and purpose, emerging from their leafy cover with as much grace as their lanky forms could muster. Approaching the festivities, Molly put on a crooked grin, while Bill slipped a red clown nose into view, completing his ensemble. He took the lead, puffing his chest out as though walking onstage. "Time to see if we can pull off the great preschool heist," Molly murmured under her breath, casting a wry glance at Bill, who already seemed to be reaching for a large box of cupcakes. "I'll keep them busy. You grab the loot." "Got it," Bill reassured her, patting the pouch hidden inside his jacket. "Let’s just hope these kids have terrible taste," he added, before they both plunged into the kaleidoscope of surreal party chaos.
