Molly: "It's dark enough, I'll check the perimeter first," Bill said. "That's because you love to talk. " "Well, maybe you can sneak in like a cat burglar then," Bill teased. The two stole out of the bushes, sticking to the tree line before they breached the garden. Bill stopped short under Molly's glare. "Okay, finding the open window was a stroke of luck." "There, the guard's taken drugs, we've got it," Molly whispered. "It's a straight shot to the presents pile." The two sneaked in, footsteps muffled on the grass. Once they scaled the windowsill, they rushed to the table. Bundles of presents were crisply wrapped, colorfully presented. Bill looked back at the door, anxious. "They'll call the police if they catch us. "What if no one stops them in time?" "Shush Bill, at least bring a bag in case," Molly unearthed a duffel bag and signaled Bill to fill up. "The more we take, the less they have." "I really should go," Bill said throwing in another gift. "Why? Everyone's asleep, except your snoring," Molly said. The banter was cut short by a sudden commotion in the kitchen. "The stove, someone left the stovetop light" "A child miracle," Molly froze. "Let's go, but leave the presents behind, we can't afford the police scurrying around." Suddenly, Molly cleared her throat. "The rewards are better here, better than they thought." "Sleepwalking seems like a better explanation for me." Bill's knuckles rapped the banister of the breakfast table. "We should have left when we had the chance," Molly said. "After what, we broke into a child's party?," Bill eventuated. "What a crazy ending to a summer job for a wealthy retiree," she then rose and left with a duffel bag. "It wasn't the plan," she muttered under her breath. "We were after something else and got this instead." --- Blurry text removed the silencing and background sound, transforming the pieces of chatter into a story that reaches beyond the dialogue of two thieves. The remaining dialogue extracted tells of a single, tense night that Molly and Bill spent in a child's room. They face a decision to leave when presented with an opportunity to take away presents. Molly decides to leave, though, at a cost to Bill. The story ends with Molly grumbling about the risk, that they happened to get into a house when they were stealing something else. What it does not culminate into a single moment that has happened once, in a home they do not know. The two may escape the police by remaining silent. But their agreement is broken when Molly rescues Bill's wife in their home, taking the wheel. Molly does not know Molly enough, and the reader, too, cannot know Molly. The nobility of the titular thieves is always a part of the book, but it also serves Molly every storyteller, mathematician, and artist to break up their act and write a blindly true account of the night.
