"If you're going to rob a children's party, make sure it's got enough loot to be worth it," Bill said, adjusting his toddler disguise, a bright yellow construction outfit. "It's gonna be teeming with presents," Molly reassured him, tugging on a pink wig and oversized librarian glasses. "These fancy parties? The gifts are always top notch." "You've seen the guest list?" Bill asked, eyeing her as he struggled with the Velcro on his yellow hat. "Of course I have. Little Timmy Rich kid?" Molly explained. "I'd say half the fathers are CEOs and the others are doctors. We're looking at a five-figure haul easily." "Are you sure it'll be that many presents?" "Kids at this age? Every guest brings a gift. It'll be a goldmine in toys and envelopes of cash. Oh, and by the way, I got us jobs to get us in." Bill's eyebrows shot up, "What kind of jobs?" "I managed to convince them to hire us as the entertainment staff." Molly grinned mischievously. "What the fiddlesticks, Molly! We're thieves, not clowns." "We're a duo henceforth known as Blinky the Bunny and Rosie the Rag Doll!" Molly said, waving at an invisible audience. "Bill, get in character." "How do we get out of here with a load of presents?" "Leave that to Blinky. I've rigged the bounce house to inflate into an escape tunnel." "An escape tunnel? Really." "It's like a Trojan Horse but for inflatables." "But what about the security cameras? This is a rich people party. Bet they got the works." "Covered. Blinky has comrades on the inside, hacking all the feeds." "Comrades? Identify yourself!" Molly opened her notebook. "An old realtor with a grudge and a paranoid grandma trying to remind people she's still got it. Their combo gives us a free path." Bill stared directly at Molly. "We could get caught. There's kids there." "Hey. You're the one who said you'd rob a slushie truck. Baby steps." "Fair enough." Bill sighed and went to the bathroom to wolf down a handful of cinnamon candy. "What was that sigh for?" "Cinnamon. I know I shouldn't, but--" Bill started. "If we get caught, first thing they'll check for is cinnamon fingerprints." "I didn't. I wouldn't. I just needed a sugar boost." "And your energy drink of choice just happened to be Button Fruit Sodapop?" Bill shrugged. It was an impossible lie, one Molly could never believe. "Bill! We're in character!" How could she expect him to stay in character in a yellow onesie? "Time for Blinky and Rosie to meet my ship!" Molly clapped and scurried out the door. Two hours later, Bill and Molly were at the party in full costume, torturing kids with balloon animals as they slowly gathered the presents. Well into the early afternoon, the kids began getting restless. Parents saw their overhyped offspring at that moment. Bill shouted, "Now's our chance! Time for the main event!" Molly's face transformed into a middle-aged woman's as she announced, "A sideways Simon Says for prizes and Piñata time!" The kids swarmed the piñata. Bill whispered, "Pass the presents to the father?" "Left us too tired for work." Molly blew raspberries. "Wait for the climb." As their song played, the piñata split open and toys and candy tumbled to the ground. While the children were distracted, Molly and Bill dashed away, down the escape tunnel. "--- Freedom! " "That's it?" "A little funny, but: I forgot my tickets." Bill answered forlornly. The party parents stood before them, cotton candy sticks and pop-oms flapping from their suits.
