Molly and Bill crouched in the abandoned warehouse doorway, their eyes scanning the cramped space. The air reeked of old boxes and dust. They held their breath as a toddler in a pink tutu tiptoed past them, her voice squeaking a high-pitched question. "Mommy's looking for me." Molly mouthed an innocently guilty expression back at Molly, who quickly discreetly waved him off. "She has no idea you're here. Let's keep quiet." Bill nodded, mimicking the toddler's movements, then dropped a few feet further back, holding a briefcase that hadn't been moved since the last time they'd been here. The folder contained a fortune: five new iPads and a cash belt. As they crept forward, their heads ducked around a corner. The party was a chaos of colorful balloons, creased white sheets, and a makeshift feast of cake and cookies. A boisterous game of pin the tail on the donkey loomed over the living room, where a chattering group of rowdy adults laughed and clapped. On the coffee table, a large sheet wrapped around a small gift box caught Bill's eye. The box was clearly been moved recently, and Bill could smell the last scent of a scented candle inside. A sly grin spread across his face. "We've got the loot," he whispered, his voice barely audible over the din of the party. Molly's eyes flashed with excitement. "Here it is, Bill. And even better, the party's almost over. Should we make a run for it or find a hiding spot?" Bill shrugged, his fingers drumming a staccato beat on the sheet. "Either works. The kid's gonna be thrilled to have his presents returned." Molly's expression turned solemn. "We'll do what it takes to get him whatever he wants." Molly's attention snapped back to the present in her hand. Bill followed her gaze to a pile of large bags in the corner. "What's that?" A stack of big boxes, labeled "Kitchen Aisles." "Hmm," Molly muttered. "Not exactly the kind of loot we want." Bill scanned the room, noting that there were more party supplies scattered about these rooms as well. A storage room was the direction to hit next. The music slowed, and the toddler's voice called out, "I gave up the donkey, Mommy! And I only hit the binoculars the wrong shelf!" Molly waved a hand, pretending to hold a toy, and quickly tuck away the "donkey" in a large bag.
