Molly leaned against the wall, her eyes scanning the alley behind them for any sign of the baby monitor. Bill walked around her, his eyes fixed on the package bags, counted and stapled, and then added a small radio transmitter to the package. "The transmitter is set to go live in five minutes," he whispered, already digging into his worn leather satchel. "Once it goes down, we've got our signal. The kid is going to be thrilled with the presents." Molly raised an eyebrow. "You think?" Bill handed her the duffel bag, filled with assorted toys and trinkets. "I did. I mean, I had a kid this age when I was about your age and let's just say I knew exactly what they wanted to want." Molly shrugged and took a handful of wrapping paper, her fingers uncurling with a bit of rustiness. "It's a guy. I've been listening to him talk to himself." Bill snorted. "You have no idea. There. And the presents are nice. I mean, who says you get stuff when you're 5?" "Hey, I got some great stuff. A new bike, actually. A nice bike. Just what I've been wanting." Molly's eyes met Bill's, and she smiled. "You're not getting to stay here, trust me." Bill's face creased into a grin. "My parents wouldn't let me come in, but I managed to con my way into their basement." Molly rolled her eyes. "That's not the point. I just need to make sure there's a way in. What if they catch us?" Bill held up the transmitter. "I've got it covered. I sent it via femtorensis via a burner phone. It's encoded and undetectable. No way our marks can trace it back to us." Molly's eyes narrowed. "How long did it take to send it?" "About ten minutes. But it's the future-proof kind of the transmitter. It's only readable by the intended recipients. We don't even know they're transmitting." Molly's grin began to falter, replaced by a look of panic. "That's true. But they're going to be thrilled. The kid's going to have a massive warehouse full of wonderful gifts before the morning is over." "I hope so," Bill said, pausing in the doorway. He flicked off the lights in the hallway, plunging them into darkness, and walked out into the silent night.
