"Molly, are you sure this is a good idea?" Bill whispered, fidgeting with his black ski mask. "For the fifth time, yes, Bill," Molly hissed. "It's a children's party. What could possibly go wrong?" "I don't know...everything?" Molly rolled her eyes behind her cat-eye mask. "Look, the kids are distracted with the clown, the parents are distracted with their phones, and we've studied the security camera patterns for the past week. We're professionals. We've got this." Bill gulped nervously. "But what if—" "No more 'what-ifs'. We need to move now," Molly interrupted, her tone brooking no argument. Bill took a deep breath and nodded, adjusting his mask one final time. The pair crept along the side of the building, pressing themselves against the wall as they reached the corner. A burst of laughter from the party echoed through the crisp night air. Molly peeked around the edge, scanning the scene. "You see anything?" Bill whispered. "Just a bunch of adults scrolling through Instagram and drinking wine." "How about the presents?" Molly's eyes zeroed in on a table piled high with colorful gift bags and boxes wrapped in cartoon characters. "Jackpot." "So, we just...walk in?" "Not quite, my anxious sidekick." Molly pulled out a small device from her pocket. "Remember the security cameras?" "Oh, right." Molly pressed a button, and a few moments later, the cameras went dark. "Now we walk in." They strolled into the party, acting like they belonged. A few parents gave them curious glances, but most were too absorbed in their own conversations or phones to give it much thought. Molly grabbed a champagne flute from a passing waiter's tray, while Bill awkwardly bobbed his head to the music. "Dance a little more naturally, would you?" Molly muttered. "You're supposed to be blending in, not impersonating a bobblehead." Bill shot her an indignant look but complied. As they made their way toward the present table, Molly smiled and nodded at people, pretending to engage in conversation. When they finally reached their target, Molly grabbed a gift bag off the pile and inspected it. "Act casual," she whispered to Bill. "We don't want to draw attention." Bill nodded, picking up a present wrapped in bright yellow paper. Just then, a voice rang out over the crowd. "Hey! Who are you?" The thieves froze. Molly slowly turned around to see a suspicious-looking man striding toward them. "Uh, we're with the entertainment?" Bill stammered. The man frowned, crossing his arms. "I didn't hire any masked entertainers." "New policy," Molly interjected smoothly. "You know, for health and safety reasons." He didn't look convinced. "I don't—" But before he could finish his sentence, the ground beneath them started shaking. The music stopped abruptly, replaced by screams and the sound of crumbling walls. "What's happening?" Bill yelled over the chaos. "I think it's an earthquake!" Molly shouted back, her eyes wide. And just like that, their carefully planned heist was derailed by an unexpected natural disaster. "Well," Molly said wryly, clutching a stolen gift bag as the world shook around them, "I guess you were right about something going wrong."
