Molly spread the hand-drawn map across the sticky diner table, knocking over the ketchup bottle for the third time that morning. Bill caught it without looking up from his phone. "Put that away," Molly said. "We need to focus. The party starts at two." "I'm looking up the address." "I already have the address. It's 4412 Maple Lane. The Henderson kid. Turning seven." Bill set his phone down and squinted at the map. "Why is there a dragon in the backyard?" "That's the bouncy castle. I'm not an artist, Bill. Stay with me here." She tapped the paper with a chewed pencil. "The presents will be on a table near the back door. Standard suburban layout. Gift bag, gift bag, wrapped box, wrapped box. We're talking maybe thirty presents total." "Thirty? That's a lot of friends for a seven-year-old." "The Hendersons are popular. PTA family. The mom makes those little cake pops that everyone loses their minds over." "Oh, I've had those. They're incredible." "Focus, Bill." "Right, right. So what's the plan? We just walk in and grab everything?" "No, we do not just walk in and grab everything. There will be twenty-six children hopped up on sugar and a half dozen parents pretending to enjoy themselves. We need a distraction." "I could pretend to be a clown." "You are a clown. That's not the same thing. No, I was thinking something more elegant. You go in through the side gate dressed as a pizza delivery guy. Nobody questions a pizza delivery at a kids' party." "What if they didn't order pizza?" "Everyone orders pizza at a kids' party, Bill. And if they didn't, even better. Free pizza. They'll be so excited figuring out who sent it that I can slip in through the back, load the presents into the van, and be gone before anyone notices." "What kind of pizza are we bringing?" "It doesn't matter what kind of pizza we're bringing." "It matters a little. You show up with anchovies and the whole operation falls apart. Kids hate anchovies. The parents get suspicious. Next thing you know someone's writing down our license plate." Molly stared at him for a long moment. "Pepperoni. We'll bring pepperoni." "And maybe a cheese for the picky ones." "Fine. Pepperoni and cheese. Can we move on?" "What about the bouncy castle?" "What about it?" "Well, if the kids are in the bouncy castle, they can see the whole backyard. Little eyes everywhere, Molly. They're like security cameras that pick their noses." She hadn't considered that. She looked at the dragon on her map and frowned. "We need someone to engage the bouncy castle," she muttered. "Engage the bouncy castle? What does that even mean?" "It means we need a third person. Someone to get in there and keep those kids distracted." Bill slowly smiled. "I know a guy." "If you say your brother, I swear—" "He's very good with children." "He got banned from a Build-A-Bear, Bill." "That was a misunderstanding." Molly buried her face in her hands while Bill stole her last French fry.
