Could the alarm have been a distraction? The bell above the door jingles every time a customer leaves. I noticed a faint scent of lavender near the back shelf, where the old ledger sits. Lavender is Mrs. Kline’s favorite, but the ledger should be in the safe, not on a shelf. Maybe someone slipped the locket inside a bag of flour, hoping it would blend in. If that’s true, the flour would be slightly heavier, but the scales in the kitchen are old. I’ll check the sack after the morning rush; perhaps the locket will surface with the dough.
