Molly adjusted her oversized sunglasses and leaned against the wrought-iron fence of the lavish backyard. The party was in full swing—balloons bobbed in the breeze, kids shrieked with laughter, and a clown juggled flaming torches like it was no big deal. Bill crouched beside her, clutching a clipboard like a man who belonged there. "You realize this is the most morally questionable heist we’ve ever attempted, right?" Molly smirked. "Oh, come on. It’s not like we’re stealing from orphans. These kids are loaded. Their parents will just buy them new stuff." Bill squinted at the clipboard. "According to my research, the birthday boy’s dad owns a chain of luxury car dealerships. We’re basically redistributing wealth." "Exactly. We’re Robin Hood, but with better taste in targets." A waiter passed by with a tray of tiny sandwiches. Molly snatched one and popped it into her mouth. "Mmm. Cucumber. Fancy." Bill groaned. "Focus, Molly. We’ve got a five-minute window before the cake arrives. That’s when the parents will be distracted, and the kids will be too sugared-up to notice us." Molly wiped crumbs from her fingers. "You’re overthinking it. We just walk in, grab the presents, and walk out. Easy." "Easy? There’s a clown. Clowns are unpredictable. What if he tries to juggle us?" Molly rolled her eyes. "Bill, if a clown tries to juggle us, we’ll just—" "Molly!" Bill hissed, grabbing her arm. "The cake’s coming out. Now or never." They straightened their disguises—Molly as a caterer, Bill as a slightly nervous party planner—and strolled toward the gift table like they owned the place. A little girl in a sparkly dress eyed them suspiciously. "Are you here for the presents?" Molly beamed. "Yep! We’re the present fairies. We take them to the magic wrapping room." The girl gasped. "Like Santa?" "Exactly like Santa," Molly said, nodding solemnly. Bill coughed. "Uh, Molly, the parents are watching." Molly turned to see a well-dressed woman narrowing her eyes. "Excuse me, are you with the catering staff?" Bill stepped forward, clipboard at the ready. "Yes, ma’am! We’re here to, uh, organize the gifts for the, uh, surprise finale!" The woman frowned. "There’s no surprise finale." Molly elbowed Bill. "Right! That’s why we’re here. To make sure there is one." The woman hesitated, then waved them off. "Just don’t touch the big one. That’s from Daddy." Molly and Bill exchanged a glance. The big one. Of course. As soon as the woman turned away, Molly grabbed a stuffed unicorn and stuffed it into her apron. "Score." Bill snatched a remote-controlled car. "This is for the cause." A loud voice boomed behind them. "Hey! What are you doing?" They spun around to see the clown, now sans flaming torches, glaring at them. Molly forced a laugh. "Just, uh, quality control!" The clown crossed his arms. "Quality control doesn’t involve stealing." Bill sighed. "Look, buddy, we’re just trying to make the world a better place." The clown tilted his head. "By stealing from kids?" Molly groaned. "Fine. We’re terrible people. Happy?" The clown nodded. "Much better. Now drop the loot and scram." Molly and Bill exchanged a look, then dropped their stolen goods and bolted for the fence. As they sprinted down the street, Bill panted, "Well, that was a disaster." Molly grinned. "Nah. We’ll be back. Next time, we’re going as clowns."
