The rain drummed against the roof of the stolen ice cream truck as Molly adjusted the oversized sunglasses she’d swiped from a tourist earlier that week. Beside her, Bill fiddled with a pair of inflatable unicorn horns, trying to make them fit over his bald head. “You look ridiculous,” Molly said, tossing a bag of stolen balloons at him. “And you look like a disgruntled librarian,” Bill shot back, yanking the horns into place. “But at least I’m blending in.” Molly scowled. “We’re breaking into a children’s party, not a petting zoo.” “Exactly. Kids love unicorns. It’s the perfect cover.” “Or the perfect way to get arrested for impersonating a children’s entertainer.” Bill ignored her and reached for a clipboard. “According to my intel, the party’s in full swing. The parents are drunk, the kids are sugar-crazed, and the presents are piled high.” Molly smirked. “You sound like you’ve been studying.” “Of course I have. This isn’t some amateur operation. We’re professionals.” “Professionals who are about to steal from toddlers.” “They won’t even notice,” Bill said, waving a hand. “And if they do, we’ll just say we’re the ‘gift fairy.’” Molly groaned. “You’re delusional.” “No, I’m resourceful. Now, are you ready or not?” Molly sighed and grabbed a bag of stolen party favors. “Fine. But if this goes south, I’m blaming you.” “Deal.” They slipped out of the truck and into the backyard, where a dozen kids were shrieking and chasing each other with inflatable hammers. A cluster of parents stood near the snack table, laughing and sipping from red Solo cups. “See?” Bill whispered. “Total chaos. Perfect conditions.” Molly rolled her eyes. “Just don’t get distracted by the cupcakes.” “No promises.” They crept toward the gift table, dodging a toddler on a tricycle and a rogue piñata. Just as they reached the presents, a little girl in a sparkly dress pointed at them. “Look, Mommy! The unicorn is here!” Bill froze. “Uh… hi, kid.” The girl tilted her head. “Are you the gift fairy?” Molly elbowed him. “Told you.” Bill cleared his throat. “Yes! That’s me. The gift fairy. And I’ve come to… uh… collect the presents for my magical workshop.” The girl’s eyes widened. “Really?” “Yep. Very magical.” “Can I come?” “Absolutely not,” Molly muttered. Bill shot her a look. “I mean, no. It’s very dangerous. Full of… uh… gift-eating dragons.” The girl gasped. “Like in my storybook?” “Exactly like that.” Just then, a woman in a floral dress approached. “Oh! You must be the entertainer we hired.” Bill’s face went pale. “Entertainer?” “Yes! The kids have been asking for the unicorn all day.” Molly groaned. “We’re not—” “Of course!” Bill interrupted, forcing a grin. “I’m just here to… entertain. And collect gifts. For the dragons.” The woman blinked. “Right. Well, the kids would love a magic show.” Bill swallowed hard. “Magic. Yes. I’ll get right on that.” As the woman walked away, Molly grabbed his arm. “We need to leave. Now.” “No, no, we’ve got this,” Bill said, adjusting his horns. “I’ll just… improvise.” Molly sighed. “You’re going to get us caught.” “Nah. I’m a natural.” And with that, Bill marched toward the kids, ready to perform the worst magic show in history.
