Crouched behind the overgrown pyracantha bush at the edge of Maple Street’s annual block party, Molly and Bill pressed flat as weathered patio pavers, the sweet cloying scent of cotton candy curling through the air and sticking to the sweat beading on Bill’s upper lip. The bounce house’s roaring air blower drowned out most high-pitched shrieks of toddlers chasing a wobbly bubble machine, and the present table glinted a dozen feet away, draped in a neon pink tablecloth dotted with gummy bear decals. Bill’s crumpled yarn “event volunteer” lanyard kept slipping off his neck, and he swatted repeatedly at a ladybug that mistook his faded plaid flannel for a wildflower bed. “Molls, this is so dumb,” Bill whispered, jerking his chin at the pile of wrapped gifts. “Last week you made us steal a box of novelty mustaches, and the flea market guy said they were too tacky to sell.” Molly’s eyes stayed locked on the table, where a cluster of first-graders cooed over a giant stuffed sloth propped against a stack of board games. “Quit moping. This is low-effort—kids won’t notice their gifts are gone until they have to write thank-you notes, and we’ll be halfway to the thrift store before anyone even thinks to check.” “But the birthday mom just waved at me!” Bill yelped, ducking so fast his baseball cap slid over his eyes. “She asked if I was here to help with the face paint station!” Molly snort-laughed, nodding at the harried face painter, who was caked in more silver glitter than the piñata hanging from the oak tree. “She confused you with the local dog rescue volunteer. Your flannel matches their adoption shirts. Pass the glitter glue.” Bill fumbled in his ratty canvas fanny pack, dropping a pack of glow sticks that skittered across the dewy grass. A toddler paused to point at the glowing plastic, but their mom yelled about sharing toys before they could investigate. He handed over the glitter glue tube, hands trembling so bad the cap clattered against his kneecap. Molly squirted a dollop of iridescent glitter glue onto the base of the bounce house, then flicked a handful of extra flecks into the breeze. When the kids spotted the sparkly streaks and floating dust, they surged toward the inflatable, whooping and shoving at the entry flap. The two adults hovering by the snack table looked up, curious, then went back to bickering over whose potato salad had won the block’s annual contest. “Wait, hold on,” Bill breathed, pointing at the frontmost present—a giant rainbow loom kit wrapped in metallic purple paper. “Her mom said she spent three weeks braiding and resizing rubber bands for that, to give her best friend. We can’t take that.” “Leave it,” Molly said, tapping the kit with her painted nail. “She’ll just assume it got lost in the yard or dragged off by the neighbor’s golden retriever. C’mon, one… two…” She darted out from the bush, Bill hot on her heels, their sneakers silent on the cool grass as they made for the table. A iridescent bubble bounced off Molly’s oversized sunglasses, and she grabbed a stack of board games, pausing for half a second to tuck a tiny stuffed unicorn into her pocket for her niece back home. Bill snatched a glow-in-the-dark T-Rex and hurried to keep up, his lanyard slipping twice around his ears before he managed to yank it back into place.
