The moon hung low over the cul-de-sac, casting long, jagged shadows across the chain-link fence. Molly checked her reflection in the van mirror, adjusting the false mustache she had tucked inside her ear. It made her look like a distressed baker caught in the rain. Bill was currently struggling to lift a rubber duck from the back seat. He grunted as he shoved it toward his chest. "This is too heavy," Bill muttered, shifting his weight against the brake pedal. "The duck weighs a ton." Molly rolled her eyes. "It is not that heavy. It is just floaty." She turned to check the silenced library alarm. "We still have the plan, Bill? You heard the time on the radio this morning?" Bill patted the duck gently with his palm. "The plan is to move fast. I am very fast for a duck." "You are slow," Molly corrected. "You are slow like a sloth wearing a swimsuit." "If I was a sloth," Bill said, his accent shifting with a wet cough. "I could catch the fridge." "The fridge is too big to move," Molly pointed out. "We only need the presents." "The presents are in the fridge," Bill replied. He paused, thinking about the ice cream. "But no, the presents are under the table." Molly looked down the driveway. "Under the table? Bill, that is a disaster waiting to happen." "Wait a moment," Bill wiped his eye with the side of his forefinger. "Do you mean the towel?" "No, I meant the boxes." "The boxes are light," Bill said. "I think they are very light." Molly sigh. She pulled a large key from her pocket. "Do you think we should open the door softly this time?" "I think the door is open," Bill said, standing up. "The door is open to us." Molly turned back to look at the box of presents tightly. "We have to be careful with the bag." "The bag is big," Bill answered. "The bag is heavy." "We take the bag," Molly said firmly, stepping out of the van. "We take the bag," Bill agreed, following her into the alley. Molly grabbed the box. "Let's go."
