The living room hummed with the sound of shrieking children. Balloons bobbed against the ceiling, and somewhere, a clown was making animal noises to a soundtrack of gleeful terror. Molly peered through the binoculars from the minivan parked across the street. “There. The mountain of loot by the fireplace. We’re looking at two dozen presents, easy. Wrapping paper alone is worth a fortune in scrap.” Bill polished a fingerprint-free latex glove on his sweater. “I don’t know, Molly. My sister-in-law’s kid is in there. What if little Timmy recognizes my voice?” “Bill, you’re wearing a fake mustache and a Hawaiian shirt. You look like a divorced tourist. He won’t know you.” She lowered the binoculars. “Remember the plan?” “Right. Operation Giggles. Phase one: I create a distraction by the snack table.” “And what is your distraction?” He patted his jacket pocket, which jingled. “I’m going to challenge the strongest kid here to a sword fight with balloon animals. A classic conflict.” “That’s… actually not terrible. Phase two?” “You, dressed as the new ‘party magician,’ will hypnotize the clown with your ‘magic wand,’ which is actually a tranquilizer dart.” “A dart filled with a mild, fast-acting sedative. Very humane.” “While the children are hypnotized by your—what did you call it?—‘shimmering cape of wonder,’ I will systematically load the presents into the large, decorative Santa sack we brought.” “The sack is festive and blends in. It’s key.” “What if the birthday boy asks for his present? It has his name on it, Molly. A big, glittery ‘Jaxon’.” Molly sighed. “Bill, we’ve been over this. Jaxon is seven. His attention span is shorter than a goldfish’s memory. I will produce a shiny, decoy present from behind his ear—a cheap watch with a bow on it. He will be ecstatic.” “And his parents? What if they notice their heirloom china is missing too?” “Why would they notice? We’re not stealing china, Bill. We’re stealing the presents. Stay focused.” She checked her watch. “Showtime. Remember: calm, professional, and for God’s sake, don’t make eye contact with the piñata. It’s unsettling.” Five minutes later, Bill stood by a table groaning with cupcakes, his balloon sword at the ready. “I challenge thee!” he declared to a bewildered six-year-old. A fierce, squeaking duel commenced. Molly, draped in a sequined curtain, tapped the clown on the shoulder. “Look into my eyes… your nose is getting heavier… you feel a strong desire to take a nap in the coat closet…” The clown blinked, then wobbled toward the hallway, humming softly. Bill, having won his duel, began casually tossing presents into the enormous Santa sack. “This one’s light… ah, Legos, good resale value… oh, a teddy bear, that’s just sentimental fluff…” A tiny voice piped up beside him. “Mister? That’s my brother’s.” Bill froze, clutching a gift-wrapped box. He looked down into the earnest eyes of a little girl in a fairy costume. “Ah. Is it? Well, you know, Santa’s elves sometimes do… quality control checks. Very boring. Go have a cupcake.” She didn’t move. Molly appeared, swooping in with the decoy present. “And for the lovely fairy princess, a magical, glittering gift!” She produced the bow-adorned watch. The girl gasped, distracted. “It sparkles!” “Precisely,” Molly said, steering her toward the snack table. She shot a look at Bill. “*Santa’s elves?*” “It was all I had!” They worked in tandem for another frantic minute, the sack growing monstrously full. “One more,” Molly whispered. “The big one. ‘To Jaxon, From Grandma and Grandpa.’ That’s the crown jewel.” Bill heaved it up. “It’s heavy. Probably a bike. A tiny, expensive bike.” “Let’s go. Walk, don’t run. Blend in.” They strolled toward the front door, two oddly-dressed adults carrying a comically large sack of stolen children’s joy. They were almost clear when the clown, now awake and deeply confused, stumbled out of the coat closet. “Hey! The magician’s not on the schedule!” Every child’s head turned. Molly didn’t break stride. “Bill. Phase three.” “Right. The emergency exit.” He reached into his other pocket, pulled out a handful of glitter, and threw it into the air. “Sparkle smoke bomb! Disappear!” As a cloud of cheap glitter rained down, Molly and Bill slipped out the door, the heavy sack thumping down the porch steps behind them. In the van, tires squealing away, Bill looked at the bulging sack. “I feel sort of… guilty.” Molly adjusted her sequined curtain. “Don’t. We just liberated these presents from a life of being outgrown in three months. We’re recycling heroes.” She patted the sack. “Now, let’s go see what Jaxon’s grandparents really think of him.”
