The supply closet smelled of cheap disinfectant and forgotten balloon helium. Molly unfolded a crayon-drawn map on a stack of paper plates. “The presents are in the living room, guarded by a tactical unit of sugar-high six-year-olds. Phase one: distraction.” Bill squinted at the map. “Is that a dinosaur or a volcano?” “It’s the cake. A volcanic dinosaur cake. Bill, focus.” She tapped a section labeled ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey.’ “We deploy the world’s most annoying donkey tail—equipped with a squeaker—here. It will create a diversionary vortex.” Bill nodded, impressed. “Vortex. Fancy.” “Phase two: you, disguised as a magician, approach the present table. I’ve prepared a routine. You say, ‘For my next trick, I will make these presents disappear!’ Then you point dramatically at nothing, and while they’re looking, I, concealed within this magnificent plush bear, roll the presents out via the patio door.” Bill held up the enormous, hollowed-out teddy bear costume. “Why am I the magician and not the bear?” “Because last time you were a bear, you tried to hibernate. Now, recite your line.” Bill cleared his throat, puffing out his chest. “For my next trick… I will make these presents… *ex-plode*?” “*Disappear*, Bill. *Disappear*. The goal is theft, not property damage and potential felony charges.” She sighed, rubbing her temples. “Okay, new plan. We use the pinata.” “The one shaped like a cheerful star?” “No, the backup one. The one shaped like a giant, angry owl. You swing. Kids swarm. In the chaos, I, as the world’s most dedicated party clown, load the presents into these oversized gift bags.” Bill’s eyes lit up. “I get to swing a stick?” “You get to swing a stick. But on my signal. The signal is me honking this horn twice.” She produced a comically small bicycle horn. “Got it. Swing on the double honk.” They shuffled out of the closet into the hallway pandemonium. A wave of shrieking children nearly swept them away. Bill took his position by the pinata, grabbing the blindfold and stick. Molly, now in a ridiculous rainbow wig and oversized shoes, positioned herself near the mountain of presents. Bill blindfolded a willing child, spun her three times, and handed her the stick. The child swung wildly, missing the owl by a foot. The crowd booed playfully. Bill leaned in, whispering loudly, “Aim for the eye, kid. The glass eye.” Molly shot him a look. That was not part of the plan. The next child connected with a mighty *thwack*. Candy exploded into the air. Children screamed and dove. It was perfect chaos. Molly honked twice. Bill, caught in the moment, forgot the plan. He lunged for the candy, his magician’s cape sweeping a tray of juice boxes onto the floor. He slipped, landing in a puddle of red punch. Molly, dragging a bulging gift bag, saw him flailing. “The presents, Bill! Not the candy!” “I’m securing a perimeter of jellybeans!” he yelled, now trying to stuff his pockets with sweets. A tiny girl with pigtails pointed at Molly’s bag. “Hey! You’re not supposed to take those!” Molly froze. Bill, dripping with punch, stood up. He put a hand on the child’s shoulder, his face deadly serious. “This is a magical delivery. To the North Pole. For… re-gifting.” The child considered this, her eyes wide. “Can you take my brother too?” Molly seized the moment, dragging the bag out the patio door. Bill gave a solemn nod to the child and sprinted after her, his cape fluttering behind him, leaving a trail of sticky footprints and unanswered questions.
