Molly adjusted her beanie and stared at the glowing house through the bushes. “Bill, this is not a regular job. This is a children’s party. You know what that means.” Bill crouched beside her, holding a roll of duct tape like it was a sacred artifact. “It means we steal presents instead of diamonds. Everybody wins, except the people who bought the presents.” Molly whispered, “We’re not monsters. We’re professional thieves with a sense of whimsy.” Bill smirked. “Whimsy? I brought a whistle. If the security system kicks in, I can play ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.’” Molly blinked. “That’s not security, that’s a hostage soundtrack.” Bill leaned closer. “You’re just mad because my genius is loud and your genius is… stealthy.” Molly pulled out a tiny grappling hook. “My genius is quiet. Watch.” She flicked it toward the porch rail. “Quietly.” The hook thunked against the wood and bounced like it was embarrassed. Molly’s face fell. “Okay, that was not quiet.” Bill clapped once. “But it was dramatic. Dramatic equals memorable.” Molly shot him a look. “Memorable for who? The homeowners? For the child whose pony LED light just got startled?” Bill raised a finger. “Technically, we don’t touch anything that doesn’t look like it wants to be touched.” Molly sighed. “Fine. Plan. We go in, we grab the presents, we leave. No chaos, no squealing alarms, no accidental gifting.” Bill nodded solemnly. “We will be invisible. Like tax fraud.” Molly elbowed him. “Tax fraud is not invisible. It’s just… embarrassed.” They watched through the window as children shrieked with joy. A birthday banner sagged like it was tired of enthusiasm. The party lights pulsed. Bill’s eyes widened. “Look at that. So many toys. So many boxes. Things that say ‘I am expensive’ instead of ‘I am loved.’” Bill nodded slowly, as if appreciating her emotional boundaries. “So we take the expensive-looking items and spare the heartwarming ones.” Molly smiled faintly. “Exactly. Also, you promised me we would not steal anything that’s clearly from a grandparent.” Bill sputtered. “I promised? When?” Molly raised an eyebrow. “You said, ‘If it has sentimental handwriting, we leave it for Santa.’” Bill rubbed his chin. “Ah. Yes. That was on account of… vibes.” Molly checked her lockpick kit. “Now. The front door is probably booby-trapped with decorations.” Bill grinned. “Decorations are never booby-traps. They’re just… soft obstacles with bad intentions.” Molly looked at him. “Bill, you once tried to climb a balloon arch.” Bill protested, “It looked like it would lead to treasure.” Molly muttered, “It led to embarrassment and helium.” Bill pointed at the living room window. “There’s the tree. The presents are stacked under it. We grab them, bag them, and—” Molly interrupted, “And you don’t trip the motion sensor again.” Bill lifted his hand. “My motion sensor incident was not a trip. It was a protest.” Molly sighed. “It was you stepping on the robot vacuum.” Bill gave a wounded look. “It was just sitting there, judging me. I had to set it free.” Molly started climbing onto the porch rail. “Quietly, Bill.” Bill followed, whispering now like a man trying not to wake up his own ego. “Quietly. Totally. I am a ninja of stealth.” Molly climbed down the ladder into the yard. “You are a ninja of… noise.” Bill whispered, “Listen, someone inside just sneezed. That’s basically proof the building is alive. Maybe we should steal the sneeze box.” Molly grabbed his sleeve. “No sneezes. No boxes. Only presents.” Bill pulled a small bag over his shoulder. “Okay. Present mission. We do this clean.” Molly paused at the door, hand on the knob. “On three. One… two…” Bill leaned close. “Three… I feel a little bad.” Molly smiled. “Good. That means you’re paying attention.” Bill opened his mouth, then quickly closed it. “I’m paying attention.” Molly eased the lock with a soft click. “Go time.” They slipped inside as the music swelled from the living room, and somewhere a child laughed like a siren calling them toward their own trouble.
