Molly and Bill crouched motionless in the shadows across the street from the Smith residence. The birthday bunting fluttered in the breeze, a garish crime scene tape marred by the catty howling of children through the windows. Molly licked her thumb and checked the pulse of her silvered multitool. Bill adjusted his lead probes, tongue clamped between his teeth. The house across from them pulsed in red strobes. "So the security system's down, the guards are gone, and the house is empty, yeah?" Bill mumbled. They were just inches apart, duck-walking to the hedge. "It's just so easy to loot this place I don't even feel the excitement. There's no pressure, no danger," Molly underscored every word with a finger press. "Jesus, Molly, the sole heir is six years old. Could you gimme a freaking break?" He shook his head, disbelieving. Molly smacked his hand playfully. "Stand down, agent! I'm just trying to prep the scene." She ran a gloved finger over the shiny black crossbow, whistling a pore of disapproval. "You know, right after the alarm has been triggered, we have snipers on the roof. And the guards are processing the guests, who've been herded into a side room. They'll think it's a routine search, but we'd have a chopper on hot stand-by. And the cops..." She tapped her watch. "They'll get a diversion call, Ringos so the papers'll all blame the corporate cash for years and years and years..." "I suppose I could ring up robocop about that ringing, but you'd call me back with Dad jokes and it really wouldn't help me," Bill smiled bemusedly. A lock tattoo behind his ear glowed red for a few seconds and he nodded. "Okay, Willy. The stuff's ready, and the officers are here. We're ready to get in and out. Once the doors secure, we'll deactivate security, and I give the all-clear, Molly, you and I are in. I'll get the little tyke." "Bros are before hoes, yeah? Cuz you're my bro I guess..." Molly's hand silently tapped the side-door latch and it clicked open. An interior light glowed behind her skin-tight suit, right along her ass. Bill shook his head. Molly gestured him in with a nod. The living room was strewn with toys. Bill sidled over and picked one up. A porcelain piggy. Molly's elbow elbowed him out of the way. She whipped out the black crossbow. "Put it down, kid. And if I catch your hand holding that again, my screws'll bore through your meaty ass," she said sarcastically, flashing a white smile. "Molly." Bill breathed. "You're dying here, old girl. Speaking of meaty asses, I could use a hand. A looter's gotta eat. But," he paused, then turned back to his partner, "we're not taking a thing we haven't worked bloody hard for. These babies' trust funds? We're gonna drain 'em, and then..." He shifted his weight. "Why'd you even have to come up here in the first place?" Molly spun the crossbow in her hand, eyes darting about the room. "I got plenty of nerve, Billy boy. Enough to unclip another clip. We're not pulling out 'til we've got the rest of the crew up here too." She looked at a family portrait and shrugged. "Maybe we take out the house, sure. Maybe we strip the safe. But we're stealing all the kids' goodies, and we're keeping the camping gear. The Smothers kid's gone. And they're going to milk that guy real dry, and I'll be damned if we're not gonna get some of that cash." "That's my style!" Bill grinned. Golden selves lurched across their retinas. Molly focused in on the head of a teddy bear, and with a muttered, "Okay little guy, travels on the rugy," she reached out and tapped it, leaving her finger buried in the fake fur. There was an almost inaudible click, and the sign above the door switched from ALARM to TOILET. "It's a Public restroom. Sure it's dirty, but the bears have access. Wait, Billy," her brow furrowed, "you sure this is gonna work? What if they come back before we're done?" Bill pondered. "Then they'll find out how much sticker shock really hurts itself. C'mon, Willy, let's round up these kids' jackpots. They'll never even know we were here, but when that last toy goes away, we'll be ready."
