Molly adjusted the massive bow on her head, making sure it was positioned correctly over her beanie. "Does this look suspicious to you? I feel suspicious." Bill frowned, his fake mustache twitching with irritation. "It's a children's birthday party, Mol. Everyone's wearing silly hats. You're supposed to look ridiculous." "Easier said than done when I'm contemplating shoplifting from toddlers," she muttered, peering through the park gates where colorful balloons bobbed in the afternoon breeze. "This plan is insane, Bill. Remember when we tried to rob a bakery and the cupcakes fought back?" "That was a fluke," Bill argued, checking his watch for the sixth time. "The baker had connections to the mob. We're dealing with five-year-olds and their piggy banks here." Molly adjusted the oversized floppy hat she'd bought for the occasion. "Exactly. Underestimate children. We've learned nothing." They approached the party, where a streamer-crowned archway welcomed guests to "Timmy's Terrific Tenth." "Okay, remember the plan," Bill whispered, pulling his collar up despite the warm weather. "You create a diversion inside while I take the present table." "Distraction from what?" Molly asked, watching a group of miniature party-goers chase each other with toy swords. "Those kids have demonstrated a terrifying level of creativity already." "Doesn't matter," Bill insisted, his voice cracking slightly. "Just... yell 'aliens!' or something. Start a dance contest. I've got fifteen minutes maximum." Molly sighed, pushing through the gate and forcing a smile. "Okay, listen up, party people! Did you hear that?" she announced in her loudest party entertainer voice. "That was the sound of... surprise!" Bill ducked behind a row of chain-smoking parents and inched toward the brightly wrapped presents piled on a separate table. Molly clapped her hands. "I know this game is boring! Let's play something fun instead! Something with prizes!" "How do you know this game is boring?" a little girl in a princess dress asked, hands on hips. "Because," Molly improvised, desperate, "your faces say you're not having enough fun! Am I right?" The children exchanged glances before a boy with a superhero cape piped up. "My face says this game is okay. But I'd rather play with the piñata again." "We're playing with the piñata again," Molly declared, immediately regretting her words as the children swarmed toward a decorated donkey on the other side of the lawn. Bill, meanwhile, had nearly reached the present table when a tiny hand grabbed his ankle. "Excuse me, mister," a small voice said. "Are you going to steal the presents?" Bill froze, looking down at the freckle-faced boy staring up at him with unnerving intelligence. "No! I was just... checking the wrapping," he said with forced cheer. "The wrapping looks fine," the boy observed. "But you're sweating like my Uncle Bob when he drinks too much soda at Thanksgiving." "Hot day, you know," Bill replied, noticing Molly frantically waving at him from across the yard. "I'm watching you," the boy said seriously before walking away. "Mom says we should always watch suspicious adults." Bill swallowed hard, glancing back at Molly who mouthed "abort" from behind a game of musical chairs. "Or we could make this work," he mumbled to himself, inching closer to the prize-laden table as the "Steal the Presents" Operation went completely off the rails.
