Molly peered through the scope at the quaint suburban house, adrenaline already surging through her veins. "You're sure this is the right house, right?" she asked Bill. "Yep, the Richardsons. Little Timmy is turning eight today. Bound to be a bunch of Nespresso machines under that big ol' oak," Bill replied. The two thieves exchanged a look of excitement. A kid's birthday party was the perfect cover for their next heist. "The window on the side is our best bet. Goods look to be housed in Doug's man-cave there," Molly said. Bill chuckled as he slung his bag over his shoulder. "Expensive gadgets next to roll-up bouncy castles and squirt guns. Roger, Molly!" Molly smirked, adjusting the tight fit of her child-sized pink leggings. "Who's the king of all the little tattletales, making sure that window is cracked?" A bratty whistle pierced the air. Roger was already making a scene at the kiddie table. Shaking drums and cake-smeared faces marred the saturation of their potential mark. Gaming consoles and stacks of toys, just enough sidewalk to park the Getaway Car. "I'll head in to case the kid-cave from the inside," Bill whispered. "Guard the vehicle until those brats start to get rowdy. Part of the play-cover." Molly jerked her thumb down the block, in the direction of the driveway. "And I'm off to secure our ride. See you on the party circuit!" Bill gave a thumbs-up as he crept towards the house, disappearing around the corner. Molly crept through the shadows, heart racing as she spotted an enormous inflatable slide dominating the lawn. She tamped down a chuckle, seeing the materiality of the kid's toys. No wonder Doug wanted to splurge on the laminate shelving this year. He knew kids. They'd already have their given attention house-side, Lucy would shout. A trio of comic book characters invaded Molly's pause. She ducked down fast as knocking and Daisy Chains were heard. "Hey {SubjectMom}, Loveykins! Watch out!", little Timmy was out of breath scampering across the lawn, one arm full of party hats, the other full of balloons. "My word Timmy, those gadgets don't just fall out of the sky!!", Molly deadpanned, voice nearly cracking. This cover was afoot! The thieves had long held no hired security to care about one child's birthday playlist. They had all ridden the ds moms covered their weekends. A chuckle slipped out, matched by the hopeful rhythm beyond the walls. This birthday bash was their perfect distraction. Lucy promised their smiles would be their undoing. 'Til next heist, Molly silently strode back to Bill, planning the next move in discreet silence. The birthday party was merely the cover they needed to pull off the perfect crime. The final con hiding in the toy house treasury. Molly set her gaze firmly against the side wall, taking her position under the oak skirts. Bill was already hiding in the shadows, counting his cards. Playing the grinchwitch until Timmy burst in last. Countdown started. Hands on hips. Hats at the helmet. Balls under their hips. Cut the cake. Ruffle the bows. Pack the gifts. Ride the rope tows. This was the perfect spending caper. Right under their noses. Timmy was already too stuffed with jelly, handed over happily. This was going to be the best birthday every year--a steal of a home China caper! Until the caged door sprung shut. "Rogue sniper. At 1 mile out." "What?" "We got hit!" This birthday was about to turn deadly. Bitplayer Lass pulled up her Chipperbundle. Squeezed easy today. Buttoned right up today. "Timmy, for your mother's car, pay." Our birthday star ran off. And the heist... Ended with cake and leveraged. The birthday star paid sick. Nailed. The worst flop of a birthday caper. Until next year. In fourteen lines. That's their story. Their birthday. "With a baby."
