“I’m telling you, Bill, this is the perfect score.” “It’s a children’s birthday party, Molly.” “Exactly. Low security, high frosting, and nobody suspects the woman carrying a suspiciously large gift bag.” “That woman is you, and the bag says ‘World’s Best Aunt.’” “I contain multitudes.” “You contain lock picks, three smoke bombs, and a ham sandwich.” “The sandwich is for negotiations.” “With whom? A six-year-old?” “Never underestimate a six-year-old with a sugar rush. They’re ruthless.” Bill crouched behind the hedge and peered toward the garden. Balloons bobbed above the fence. A banner read HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TIMMY, in letters that suggested at least two had been stolen from another occasion. “There are twelve children,” he whispered. “Fourteen.” “Why are you counting?” “I’m conducting surveillance.” “You’re watching the clown.” “The clown is wearing a fake mustache.” “That’s because he’s a magician.” “That’s what he wants us to think.” On the lawn, a man in a purple wig attempted to pull a rabbit from a hat. The rabbit appeared first, followed by a startled toddler and a rubber chicken. Bill lowered his binoculars. “We go in, find the presents, and leave. No distractions.” “Agreed.” “No talking to the children.” “Fine.” “No eating the cake.” “I can’t promise that.” “Molly.” “Cake is not a distraction. Cake is fuel.” They slipped through the gate behind a delivery driver balancing six pizzas. Molly adjusted her sunglasses and smiled at the nearest parent. “Birthday wishes,” she announced. The parent nodded distractedly. “You’re with the entertainers?” “Emotionally.” Bill grabbed her elbow. “The presents are by the kitchen.” “Excellent. I’ll create a diversion.” “You said no distractions.” “This is tactical mischief.” Molly strode toward the children and clapped twice. “Who wants to see a magic trick?” Every child shouted yes, except one boy in a dinosaur costume, who narrowed his eyes. Bill hurried toward the gift table. Molly produced a coin. “Observe! This coin will vanish.” “It’s behind your ear,” said the dinosaur boy. “That’s not the trick.” “It’s in your other hand.” “Stop ruining magic, Kevin.” “My name is Timmy.” “Then stop ruining birthdays, Timmy.” Near the kitchen, Bill lifted a large wrapped box. It rattled. “Careful,” said a little girl. “That’s my present for Timmy.” Bill froze. “I’m the present inspector.” “Show me your badge.” He looked at Molly. She tossed him the fake mustache. Bill stuck it under his nose. “Official present inspector.” “That’s a mustache.” “It’s a very exclusive badge.” The dinosaur boy appeared beside him. “You’re stealing presents.” “Borrowing,” Bill said. “For how long?” “Until we determine whether they’re worth returning.” Molly joined them, holding three cupcakes. “Good news. I found the valuables.” The children surrounded them. “Are you robbers?” asked Timmy. Molly sighed. “Technically.” “Cool,” said Timmy. “Can you steal the clown’s rabbit?” The purple-haired magician gasped. “Absolutely not.” Bill glanced at Molly. “New plan?” “Obviously.” Five minutes later, the thieves escaped over the fence carrying the clown, the rabbit, and one cupcake. Behind them, the children cheered. “Where are the presents?” Bill asked. “Still at the party.” “So we stole nothing?” Molly bit into the cupcake. “We stole a career opportunity.” The rabbit kicked Bill in the ribs. “And possibly a lawsuit,” he said.
