Molly crouched behind the hedge, peering through the slats of the garden fence. Beyond it, a dozen paper lanterns swung over a lawn crowded with tiny chairs, enormous balloons, and children wearing frosting like war paint. At the center stood a mountain of presents beneath a banner reading HAPPY BIRTHDAY, REGINALD. Bill adjusted his black wool cap, which had a yellow feather stuck in it. “Why,” Molly whispered, “are you dressed like a medieval chimney sweep?” “Because stealth is about blending in,” Bill said. “And every respectable chimney sweep has a feather.” “That is a pirate hat.” “It’s a very smoky pirate.” A clown waddled past the window carrying a tray of cupcakes. Bill ducked. Molly did not. She watched the clown stop, scratch his painted chin, and continue toward the garden shed. Their target was the largest parcel, wrapped in silver paper and tied with a red bow. Beside it sat smaller gifts, all stacked beneath a plastic dinosaur whose jaws opened and closed whenever someone stepped on a nearby pedal. “Remember the plan,” Molly said. “We enter through the side gate, distract the adults, remove the presents, and exit through the conservatory.” “You said we were stealing all of them.” “That is what ‘remove the presents’ means.” “Good. I worried you’d developed principles.” “I have principles. They’re just taking the afternoon off.” Bill produced a folded map. It was actually a menu from a takeaway restaurant, annotated with arrows and a skull drawn beside the word “sausages.” “The blue line is the escape route,” he said. “That’s a drawing of a prawn.” “The prawn knows the way.” Molly sighed and glanced over the fence again. A woman in a glittery crown was herding children toward a game involving a donkey poster and several adhesive tails. Near the presents, an elderly man guarded a punch bowl with the intense suspicion of a bank teller. “Who’s the old man?” Bill asked. “Probably Reginald’s grandfather.” “He looks dangerous.” “He’s holding lemonade.” “Exactly. No one guards lemonade unless there’s something valuable in it.” The side gate creaked open. Molly and Bill slipped into the garden beneath a string of balloons. One balloon popped. Every child turned. Bill froze beside a potted fern. “Act natural,” Molly murmured. “I am natural. I’m a fern.” “You’re holding a sack.” “Some ferns are ambitious.” They shuffled toward the present pile, attempting to look like entertainers. Molly carried a tray of empty cups; Bill wore the pirate hat and held a kazoo. He played one uncertain note. The children cheered. The adults applauded. Molly stared at him. “Why did that work?” “Charisma,” Bill whispered. A little girl pointed at the sack. “Are you taking the presents?” Bill leaned down. “Yes.” Molly smacked his arm. “For the magic show,” he added. “What magic show?” “The one where the presents disappear.” The girl considered this, then shouted, “Mummy! The magicians are stealing Reginald’s presents!” Silence fell across the garden. Even the dinosaur stopped chewing. Molly grabbed Bill’s sleeve. “Run.” They bolted through the conservatory, tripped over a line of party hats, and landed in a mountain of wrapping paper. Behind them, the children shrieked with laughter. The glitter-crowned woman arrived first. “You two!” Molly raised both hands. “We surrender.” Bill peeked out from beneath a silver bow. “Does surrender include cake?” The woman pointed toward the kitchen. “Only if you help clean up.” Molly looked at the presents, then at the cake. “Deal,” she said. Bill nodded solemnly. “The heist has become employment.” And, for once, nobody called the police.
