“Tell me again why we’re robbing a children’s party?” “Because, Bill, the presents are already wrapped. That’s practically an invitation.” “It’s practically a reason to buy your own socks.” “Focus. The party is at the community hall, the presents are stacked beneath the cake table, and the adults are distracted by a magician.” “A magician?” “A very bad one. He makes handkerchiefs disappear.” “Those are his handkerchiefs.” “Exactly. No one suspects a man who loses track of his own laundry.” Molly unfolded a grease-spotted map across the café table. Bill leaned over it, knocking his teaspoon into his coffee. “According to this,” she said, “we enter through the kitchen, cross the corridor, and reach the presents in under three minutes.” “Why is the corridor labeled ‘possibly haunted’?” “Because the caretaker wrote it.” “Why did the caretaker write it?” “Because he’s dramatic.” “Why is there a drawing of a screaming clown?” “Because he’s very dramatic.” Bill studied the map. “What’s our exit?” “The window.” “We’re on the first floor.” “Ground floor.” “This country has confusing floors.” “You’ll survive.” “That’s what everyone says immediately before I fall into something.” Molly produced two paper hats from her coat. One said Birthday Princess. The other said Dino-Mite Explorer. “Which one am I wearing?” “Dino.” “I don’t want to be recognized.” “Bill, you’re wearing a fake mustache glued to your upper lip.” “It’s called a disguise.” “It’s called a caterpillar having a nervous breakdown.” He adjusted it. “Fine. What’s the signal?” “When I say, ‘Who wants more jelly?’ you grab the presents.” “And if someone says it first?” “Then improvise.” “I’m not good at improvising.” “You once convinced a policeman that a stolen bicycle was your emotional support vehicle.” “It had handlebars. The story was sound.” From the hall came the faint thump of music and a chorus of children shouting, “Again! Again!” Molly checked her watch. “The magician has begun.” “Should we be concerned that the building is shaking?” “That’s either applause or structural failure.” “Can we wait for structural failure?” “No. We have a schedule.” They slipped through the side door and crept into the kitchen. A woman in an apron turned around. “Are you with the entertainment?” Molly smiled. “Absolutely.” Bill nodded. “We’re the backup magicians.” “What do you do?” Molly pointed at Bill. “He makes valuables disappear.” Bill pointed at Molly. “She makes explanations disappear.” The woman blinked. “You’re late.” “We’re very committed to suspense,” Molly said. They hurried into the corridor. A balloon popped somewhere nearby. Bill froze. “That was a warning.” “That was a balloon.” “It knew too much.” At the party room, the magician shouted, “For my final trick, I shall make this rabbit vanish!” Molly peeked around the door. “There’s no rabbit.” “There’s a child holding a stuffed rabbit.” “Close enough.” She whispered, “Who wants more jelly?” Bill lunged toward the presents. “Me!” “Not you, Bill!” “Sorry! Reflex!” He grabbed a sack while Molly gathered boxes. A little girl appeared beside them. “Are you stealing my presents?” Molly crouched. “We prefer the term temporary collectors.” The girl narrowed her eyes. “My dad’s a lawyer.” Bill dropped the sack. “We’re leaving.” Molly sighed. “Fine. But take the cake.” “Absolutely,” Bill said. “At least we can rob dessert with dignity.”
