Molly crouched behind the hedge opposite the community hall, studying the windows through a pair of binoculars disguised as enormous pink sunglasses. Inside, children in paper crowns chased a magician who appeared to be losing an argument with a rabbit. Bill unfolded the floor plan across his knees. It had been drawn on the back of a pizza menu and smelled strongly of pepperoni. “According to my intelligence,” Molly whispered, “the presents are piled beneath the inflatable castle. We go in through the kitchen, cross the buffet, disable the clown, and leave before they cut the cake.” Bill peered over the hedge. “You have intelligence? Last week you tried to rob a bank that was actually a dental surgery.” “It had a vault-shaped cupboard.” “It had teeth on the sign.” “Banks have teeth. Financial teeth.” A burst of shrieking came from inside. The magician produced a bouquet of flowers from a child’s ear. The child screamed with delight, while another child attempted to eat one of the flowers. Bill tapped the plan. “The kitchen door is alarmed.” “Only if opened normally,” Molly said. She held up a toy fire engine. “This is our key.” “That is a fire engine.” “It’s a distraction device. I press the siren, you throw a sausage roll, and while everyone investigates the commotion, I pick the lock.” “With what?” Molly revealed a bent hairpin, a teaspoon, and something that looked suspiciously like a breadstick. Bill stared. “That’s your equipment?” “The breadstick is for morale.” They waited until the magician announced a game involving musical cushions. Every adult in the hall turned toward the chaos as thirty children hurled themselves at upholstery with the tactical precision of trained commandos. Molly vaulted the hedge. Bill followed less gracefully, becoming briefly entangled in a plastic garden gnome’s fishing rod. “Quietly,” Molly hissed. “I am quiet,” Bill replied, as the gnome’s rod snapped and slapped him across the face. At the kitchen door, Molly inserted the hairpin. The lock clicked almost immediately. Bill blinked. “That was impressive.” “I watched a tutorial.” “From a criminal?” “From a twelve-year-old doing a bedroom makeover.” They slipped inside. The kitchen contained three trays of sandwiches, a mountain of crisps, and a woman in a glittery apron arranging cupcakes shaped like dinosaurs. Molly froze. Bill smiled nervously. “Hello.” The woman turned. “Are you with the entertainer?” “Yes,” Molly said quickly. “We’re the backup performers. He’s doing magic. We do… administrative mime.” The woman nodded, accepting this with the exhausted resignation of someone supervising twelve six-year-olds near frosting. “Take those presents out before the castle collapses.” Bill and Molly exchanged a look. “Of course,” Bill said. “Safety first.” They hurried to the main hall, each carrying an empty laundry basket from the kitchen. Beneath the inflatable castle sat a glittering mound of wrapped parcels, guarded only by a cardboard sign reading DO NOT PEEK, which Bill considered insultingly optimistic. That was the diamond-shaped one.” “It was a sock puppet.” “It could have been a valuable sock puppet.” From across the hall, the birthday child blew out the candles. Adults cheered. The magician’s rabbit escaped into the buffet. Bill grabbed the baskets. “Time to go.” Molly glanced at the remaining presents, then at the children singing badly around the cake. She sighed, removed a bright red parcel from her basket, and set it back beneath the castle. “What are you doing?” Bill asked. “Leaving the kid something.” “That’s sentimental.” “It’s tactical. If we take everything, they call the police. If we leave one present, they blame Gran.” Bill considered this. “You really do have intelligence.” “Financial teeth,” Molly said, and they vanished through the kitchen just as the rabbit discovered the sausage rolls.
