Rain ticked against the van roof while Molly unfolded a crumpled map of the neighborhood. Bill leaned over it, wearing a black turtleneck, a burglar’s mask, and the expression of a man who had just discovered a difficult crossword clue. “Tonight,” Molly whispered, “we infiltrate the birthday party, locate the presents, and leave before anyone notices.” “Excellent,” Bill said. “What’s the cover?” “We’re entertainers.” “Entertainers?” “Specifically, clowns.” Bill stared at her. “You brought clown costumes?” Molly opened a duffel bag. Two enormous costumes spilled out, complete with orange wigs, floppy shoes, and plastic flowers that squirted water. “I brought one clown costume,” she said. “The other is a pirate.” “Why am I the pirate?” “Because pirates are more convincing.” “Than clowns?” “Much more.” Bill picked up the hat. “This says Captain Sparkles.” “It was the least expensive.” He sighed and examined the map. “The presents are in the living room. The children will be in the backyard. Adults near the kitchen. We enter through the side gate, perform something distracting, then collect the loot.” “What are we performing?” “I thought you were the entertainer.” “I’m the planner.” “You planned us into clown school.” Molly pointed at the house. “The birthday boy is six. Children that age love magic.” “Can you do magic?” “I can make a wallet disappear.” “Whose?” “Usually mine.” She pulled a deck of cards from her coat and shuffled with startling confidence. Bill watched one card fly beneath the van’s brake pedal. “Fine,” he said. “I’ll handle the audience.” “With what?” “I’ll tell jokes.” “You don’t know any jokes.” “I know one.” “Is it good?” “It has a beginning, a middle, and an end.” “That isn’t a joke.” “It’s a structure.” Molly folded the map. “Remember, we take only the wrapped gifts. No cake, no toys from the children, and absolutely no touching the piñata.” “Why not?” “Because it’s a trap.” “It’s full of candy.” “It’s suspended from a tree and surrounded by sticks. That is exactly how traps work.” They crept through the gate and approached the backyard. A dozen children shrieked around a magician wearing a purple cape. The magician accidentally pulled a live chicken from his hat. Bill stopped. “We may have competition.” Molly donned the clown wig. “Then we improvise.” They stepped into the yard. “Ladies and gentlemen!” Bill announced. “Prepare to be amazed by Captain Sparkles!” The children cheered. Molly bowed, tripped over her shoes, and landed beside a table stacked with presents. A little girl pointed. “That clown fell!” “Part of the act!” Molly shouted. Bill began juggling three oranges, though one was a stolen apple. Molly reached for the nearest gift, but the birthday boy blocked her. “That’s mine,” he said. “What’s inside?” she asked. “A puppy.” Molly froze. Bill dropped the fruit. From inside the box came a muffled bark. Bill whispered, “New plan?” Molly smiled weakly. “We become legitimate entertainers.” “Does that pay?” “Not yet.” The birthday boy hugged the box. “Can you do another trick?” Molly drew herself upright. “Certainly.” She snapped her fingers. Bill vanished behind the cake table. The children gasped. “Where did he go?” one shouted. “Beats me,” Molly said, eyeing the exit. “That trick works every time.”
