Molly crouched behind the hedge, peering through the slats of the garden gate. Balloons bobbed over the fence like brightly colored surveillance drones. Beyond them, a dozen children screamed around a bouncy castle shaped like a pirate ship. “Tell me again why we’re robbing a birthday party,” Bill whispered. “Because there are presents.” “There are always presents. That’s what birthdays are.” “And because,” Molly said, consulting a crumpled flyer, “the birthday boy is the son of a toy-shop owner. High-value merchandise. Remote-control dinosaurs. Limited-edition building sets. Possibly a telescope.” Bill adjusted his black ski mask. “A telescope is not a child’s present. That’s a cry for help.” “You’re missing the point.” “I’m missing several points. First, they’re children. Second, they’re children with cake. Third, your disguise is a princess hat.” Molly touched the purple cone balanced on her head. “It’s camouflage.” “It says ‘Happy Six, Rupert!’ in glitter.” “Exactly. Nobody suspects someone wearing glitter.” “They suspect them of being at a children’s party.” A woman in the garden carried a tray of sausage rolls past the patio doors. Bill watched with professional concentration. “Focus,” Molly hissed. “I am focused. On the buffet. There are tiny sandwiches.” “We are not stealing sandwiches.” “That is classist. If they’re tiny, they’re valuable.” Molly pointed toward a long table beneath a gazebo. It sagged under mountains of wrapped parcels, all covered in dinosaurs, rockets, and suspiciously expensive-looking gold paper. “There,” she said. “The haul.” Bill squinted. “I count twenty-three presents.” “Twenty-four. The one shaped like a toaster is probably a board game.” “Or a toaster.” “At a six-year-old’s party?” “Rich people have hobbies.” A shriek erupted from the pirate ship. A child tumbled out of a foam cannon and landed safely on the grass, then immediately ran back for more danger. Bill frowned. “What’s the plan?” “We go in through the side gate. You distract the adults.” “How?” “You’re charming.” “I’m wearing a ski mask.” “Take it off, then.” Bill removed the mask. Underneath, he wore a false moustache so enormous it appeared to have its own employment history. Molly stared at it. “What?” he said. “You look like a landlord in a cartoon.” “It makes me unmemorable.” “It makes you look like you’re about to tie a railway heroine to the tracks.” “That’s memorable to railway heroines. Adults see a moustache and assume responsibility.” “You’ll ask them about mortgage rates. They’ll be trapped.” Bill nodded. “And you?” “I retrieve the gifts, load them into the wheelbarrow, and meet you by the alley.” “The wheelbarrow with the teddy bear painted on it?” “Camouflage.” “Your entire criminal philosophy is based on being visibly invited.” “It has worked before.” “It worked once. At a church raffle. And we stole three jars of chutney and a folding chair.” “The chair was oak.” A little girl appeared at the gate, wearing a pirate hat and holding a plastic cutlass. She stared at them. “Are you friends of Rupert?” she asked. Molly smiled. “Of course.” “What’s his favorite dinosaur?” Bill leaned toward Molly. “This feels like a test.” “Triceratops,” Molly said confidently. The girl narrowed her eyes. “It’s ankylosaurus.” “Ah,” said Molly. “We were discussing his second favorite.” The girl raised her sword. “Password?” Bill froze. “There’s a password?” “Everybody has to say it.” Molly glanced at the packed garden, then back at the girl. “What is it?” “I can’t tell you. It’s secret.” Bill brightened. “Excellent security protocol.” The girl considered him. “You look like a bad guy.” “I do not,” Bill said. “You have a robber moustache.” “It’s a tax inspector moustache.” “That’s worse.” Molly rummaged in her pocket and produced a shiny pound coin. “How about you forget the password?” The girl gasped. “Bribery!” Bill winced. “We’re raising the next generation too efficiently.” The girl snatched the coin. “The password is ‘Captain Pickle.’” Molly and Bill exchanged a look. “Captain Pickle,” Molly said. The gate swung open. Inside, Bill walked directly toward the adults, broadening his moustache with purpose. Molly rolled the teddy-bear wheelbarrow toward the presents. A man in a paper crown intercepted Bill. “Hello! Who are you?” Bill panicked. “I’m… Captain Pickle.” The man’s face lit up. “Oh, brilliant! The entertainer’s here!” Before Bill could object, six children surrounded him. “Do a magic trick!” shouted Rupert. Bill looked helplessly at Molly. She loaded a large rocket-shaped parcel into the wheelbarrow. “Make my dad disappear!” Rupert demanded. Bill glanced at the father in the paper crown. “I can do that,” he said. “But it may take several years of paperwork.”
