"You're serious? The bouncy castle?" Molly asked, adjusting her black turtleneck over a pair of far less practical sequined leggings. Bill checked his watch, which was missing its face. "Every present is stacked behind the clown. Thirty kids, Molly. Thirty convicts with sugar blood." "We're thieves, not villains. Stealing birthday loot is low," Molly said, shaking her head. Bill kicked the tire of their van, which immediately deflated. "It's charity work with a cash payout. The parents are distracted by a magician who pulls rubber chickens from hats. We slide in, grab the pile, and vanish." "How do we blend in?" Molly asked. "We wear balloon animals as hats," Bill said. Molly stared at him. "That sounds dignified." "Exactly," Bill said. "Now, about the guard dog." "There is no dog," Molly said. "There's always a dog. Or a grandma with a whistle. Point is, we need a distraction. I brought fireworks." "Illegal fireworks?" Molly asked. "The legal kind that scream," Bill said. "Perfect," Molly said. "I'll drive. You bring the empty duffel bag that says 'Stuff for Stealing.'" "It's ironic," Bill muttered. They reached the fence. Colored lights blinked like nervous stars. "Remember," Molly said, "no violence, no tears, and definitely no cake. I'm allergic to fun." Bill nodded solemnly. "The plan is simple: I distract the clown with philosophical debate about capitalism, you sack the gifts." "Capitalism makes me nervous," Molly said. "Then argue about socialism and take the toys while he cries," Bill said. "The children will be too busy screaming with joy to notice us weeping with greed." They climbed over. The air smelled like lime sherbet and regret. "See that pile?" Bill whispered. "Wrapped in paper so shiny it could blind satellites." "Yes," Molly said. "And see that child? The one holding a bat shaped like a dinosaur?" "That is our obstacle," Bill said. "We are professionals," Molly said. "Then act like one," Bill said. "Pretend you love birthdays." "I despise them," Molly said. "Good," Bill said. "That anger is fuel. Now go." Molly crept toward the mountain of gifts, her shadow stretching long and guilty. Bill approached the clown, who was juggling rubber chickens with the confidence of a man who had seen things. "Excuse me," Bill said. "Do you think property is theft?" The clown dropped a chicken. "What?" Molly stuffed presents into the bag. "Hurry up," she hissed. "There's a toddler approaching with a sword made of cardboard." "I am working," Bill said. "This clown is having an existential crisis." "Then help me carry this," Molly said, dragging the bulging sack. "Is that all of them?" Bill asked. "Every single one," Molly said. "Even the ones marked 'Do Not Open Until Tuesday.'" "We are monsters," Bill said. "We are artists," Molly corrected. They sprinted back to the fence, the bag bouncing like a sack of screaming kittens. Behind them, children discovered empty spaces and began to wail in harmonies that could shatter glass. "Did we just ruin childhood?" Bill asked, breathless. "We liberated it," Molly said, heaving the bag over. "Now drive before the grandma blows her whistle." The van coughed to life, missing tire and all. They sped away with enough presents to supply three imaginary birthdays and one very guilty conscience. "Next time," Molly said, smiling despite herself, "we steal candy from a dentist." "That is too easy," Bill said. "But I like your ambition."<|end_message|>
