The warehouse smelled like expired cheese puffs and regret. Molly spread the blueprint across a table sticky with spilled soda. “We are not robbing a bank, Bill. We are robbing Chuckles the Clown’s annual kiddie gala.” Bill adjusted his ski mask, which made his mustache itch. “Kids never lock doors.” “They also scream,” Molly said. “You scream when you see a spider. Remember Mrs. Pemberton’s cat?” “That was tactical panic.” “The venue is a bouncy castle surrounded by balloons. We need forty-seven seconds inside.” Molly tapped a crayon circle. “Gifts are in the gift pyramid beside the piñata shaped like a unicorn.” Bill nodded slowly. “I have experience with unicorns.” “You have nightmares about them.” “I call it reconnaissance.” Molly rolled her eyes. “Costumes?” “We’re caterers,” Bill said. “Black aprons. Whistles.” “Whistles are suspicious.” “I need authority,” Bill insisted. “Without authority I am just a man in black pants holding a burlap sack near children. With a whistle I am staff.” “The sack is suspicious.” “It’s festive burlap,” Bill said. “Plaid lining.” Molly sighed and pointed at the window. “Entry is through the service tunnel behind the cotton candy machine. You disable the generator that powers the bubble foam arch.” “I can do that,” Bill said. “You said that about the aquarium penguins.” “The ice was slippery, Molly. This is electrical. Dry. Manly.” “I want you alive,” Molly said softly, then cleared her throat. “We move at eight thirty, after cake but before the magician pulls a live rabbit from anything. The parents are distracted. The children are sugar-crazed. The gifts are untouched.” “Forty-seven seconds,” Bill repeated. “You grab left half. I grab right. No talking inside. No whistling. No playing with toys.” “I wouldn’t play,” Bill said indignantly. “You once tried on a tiara at the museum job.” “That was for sizing,” Bill muttered. Molly folded the blueprint. “We leave through the dumpster chute. Bags first. You second. If I fall, keep running.” “If you fall I will ask politely if you are okay while running,” Bill said. “That is the least romantic thing anyone has said,” Molly said. “I save romance for retirement.” Molly pulled on her gloves. “One more thing. These are children’s presents. Some might be wooden trains. Handmade quilts. A goldfish in a bag named Bubbles.” Bill looked stricken. “We are stealing Bubbles?” “We are stealing the packaging Bubbles lives in,” Molly corrected. “We do not take pets. That is our code.” “I can live with that,” Bill said, adjusting his apron. “What if a child asks me for cake?” “Give them cake.” “I’m staff,” Bill said proudly. “No. You are a criminal in an apron. Do not fraternize.” Bill saluted with his whistle. “Understood, commander.” Molly grabbed her sack. “And Bill? Do not blow that whistle. Ever.” He grinned. “Unless emergency.” “The only emergency is you being you.” They moved toward the dark tunnel. Behind them the warehouse lights flickered. Outside, somewhere in the city, a balloon animal was being twisted into destiny. Bill checked his watch. “Forty-seven seconds,” he said. Molly pushed open the door. “Try forty-six.” They vanished into the night, leaving behind only the smell of cheese puffs, the sound of a whistle being nervously blown once, and the absolute certainty that nothing about this plan was going to work.<|end_message|>
