The Bluebird Café had exactly three customers, two of whom were Molly and Bill, and the third was a man asleep in a bowl of minestrone. Molly spread a napkin across the table with the solemnity of a general unveiling a battlefield. On it, she had drawn the Wexler living room as a rectangle, the birthday cake as a smaller rectangle, and the pile of presents as a glowing triangle labeled LOOT. “Remind me,” Bill whispered, “why we are robbing a six-year-old.” “Because,” Molly said, “Toby Wexler’s grandmother collects first-edition space novels, and word is she wrapped three in dinosaur paper.” “That is the worst sentence I have ever loved.” Molly tapped the napkin. “Party starts at two. Clown arrives at two-fifteen. We arrive at two-fourteen, dressed as the clown’s much more professional cousins.” Bill squinted. “I am not wearing size twenty-two shoes again. Last time I apologized to a staircase for ten minutes.” “You were concussed by balloon animals.” “They were advanced balloon animals. One had a saddle.” Molly leaned closer. Her eyes had the bright, terrible shine of a woman who had once stolen a mayor’s hat during a speech about transparency. “We go in soft. No masks until the magic show. Bill, you do the voice.” Bill inhaled, puffed his chest, and produced a sound like a kazoo joining a monastery. “Hello, children, I am Professor Gigglepants, and this is my associate, Doctor Socks.” “Perfect,” Molly said. “Unsettling but educational.” “What if they ask for a trick?” “You juggle.” “I cannot juggle.” “Then juggle badly with confidence. That is most of theater.” From the next booth, the soup man snored and stirred the minestrone with his eyebrow. Molly lowered her voice. “During the cake song, everyone faces the candles. Grown-ups cry, children scream, somebody’s aunt films vertically. That is when we move the presents to the buffet table, then to the hallway, then into the bounce house.” Bill stared. “The bounce house is our getaway vehicle?” “It is cheerful, spacious, and no policeman has ever pursued a suspect into one with dignity intact.” “There was a documentary.” “There was an incident.” Bill scratched his chin with a crayon he had stolen from the cup by the register, then looked guilty and put it back, then looked guiltier and took a different one. “Molly, be honest. Are we bad people?” Molly considered this while stirring coffee she had not paid for yet. “We are adjacent to bad. We are bad-ish. We wear bad’s coat to parties and give it back slightly stretched.” “I once stole a garden gnome and felt so awful I watered it for a year.” “That was kindness with paperwork.” A waitress drifted past. Molly smiled with all her teeth and hid the napkin under a menu. Bill smiled too, which made him look like a golden retriever accused of mail fraud. When the waitress was gone, Molly slid the napkin back out and added a tiny drawing of herself in a wig the size of a weather event. “New concern,” Bill said. “What if the real clown is also a thief?” Molly paused. “Then we tip him.” “With what?” “Morally ambiguous compliments.” Bill nodded slowly, the way a man nods when he has already lost. “Fine. But if a child catches us, I’m saying we’re the present police.” “Good,” Molly said. “Wear your stern eyebrows.” Outside, sunlight bounced off the window and made the silverware gleam like tiny, honest knives. Molly folded the napkin into her pocket. Bill paid for both coffees and left a tip large enough to confuse him for hours. At the door he stopped. “Last question,” he said. “Do we keep the dinosaur paper?” Molly sighed as if love were heavy. “Bill, we are criminals, not animals.”
