The van smelled like old french fries and bad decisions. Molly had parked it directly across from the Sunshine Jump Zone, where a banner reading HAPPY 6TH BIRTHDAY JAXON! flapped violently in the wind. Through the binoculars Bill could see a mountain of brightly wrapped presents stacked on a table next to a tired-looking clown who was smoking behind the bounce house. Molly unfolded a crumpled blueprint of the venue that she had drawn herself in crayon. The plan was labeled in glitter glue. Bill lowered the binoculars and rubbed his eyes. "This is a new low even for us," Bill said. Molly tapped the glitter glue with absolute confidence. She had circled the present table with a red heart and written jackpot. "Don't be dramatic, it's a perfect score," Molly said. "Parents overcompensate. That pile is pure, untouched, retail gold. Legos. Game consoles. Probably a bike." Bill stared at the entrance, which was guarded by two moms with clipboards and a dad in a too-tight superhero costume. "There are forty kids in there hopped up on sugar," Bill said. "That's not a crowd, that's a tiny screaming militia." The clown flicked his cigarette away and started twisting a balloon into what looked like a sad poodle. Inside, children shrieked with the particular energy of impending cake. Molly pulled a duffel bag from the back seat. Inside were two clown costumes, still damp from their last job at the aquarium. "We go in as entertainment," Molly said. "We do twenty minutes of balloons, we grab the presents during musical chairs, we leave through the kitchen." Bill held up one of the costumes. Molly grinned. She loved when his greed overrode his common sense. "Exactly," she said. "So we walk in, we smile, we steal childhood joy in bulk." Bill zipped into the topless clown suit, his knees very white and very exposed. Molly put on a rainbow wig that was actively shedding. "What's our cover story if they ask?" Bill asked. Molly opened the van door. The smell of pizza and bounce house rubber rolled out across the street. "We say we're Jaxon's uncles," Molly said. "Uncle Molly and Uncle Bill. From out of town." Bill nodded solemnly, pulling his clown nose on. It squeaked. For a moment they sat in silence, two professional thieves in ridiculous wigs, watching six-year-olds commit acts of joyful violence upon a trampoline while their parents filmed everything for evidence. "Let's go steal from children," Bill sighed. Molly started the van.
