Molly tugged her gloves tight and stared at the birthday banner flapping between two oak trees. The air smelled of cake and catastrophe. "Bill, you realize this security is just a child in a paper crown named Trevor?" Bill checked his clipboard with grave seriousness. "According to this invitation, yes. His defense is a juice box and possibly a clipboard of his own." "I don't see a clipboard," Molly said. "He has attitude," Bill corrected. "We are professional thieves planning to steal a Lego castle," Molly said, "and you are treating this like a hostile merger." "It is a hostile merger," Bill insisted. "We need assets, extraction points, and a getaway vehicle." "I have a van," Molly said. "It's covered in magnets that say 'Honor Student Parent.' It is terrifying." "Perfect camouflage," Bill agreed. They crouched behind a hydrangea hedge near the bounce house. Molly pulled out a crumpled diagram while Bill adjusted his black turtleneck. "The presents are in the living room behind a piñata that might contain a weapon," Molly said. "Children's parties are dangerous," Bill said. "There's a dog called Buster who is technically a golden retriever but acts like a crime boss." "Can we bribe Buster?" "I forgot the bacon," Bill admitted. Molly sighed sharply. "So we enter as entertainment, I drive the van, we steal toys, and leave before Trevor notices his juice box is gone." "Correct," said Bill. "Except Trevor has been staring at us for twenty minutes because I was practicing my sad clown face." "That long?" "I was committing to the bit." He produced a small red clown nose. Molly stared. "You brought a clown nose." "It's multipurpose," Bill said proudly. "It hides identity, distracts children, and explains tears." "You intend to wear it at a children's party?" "Exactly. I am Clown Bureau." He turned to her. "You are..." "I am Molly," she interrupted. "I'm not wearing the nose." "You don't have to. You can be the nervous parent with the van. We need the van." "I have it," Molly said. "It smells like motivational posters." "Excellent cover." A balloon animal twisted in Bill's hand. "Wait, is that a balloon giraffe?" "Yes," Bill said. "For the children. I say I work for entertainment, and this is my audition." "You audition with rubber anatomy?" "Children adore giraffes," Bill said defensively. "Children adore calling police," Molly countered. Bill glanced at the house. "We enter when music gets loud. Parents will be distracted by a man doing the worm near snacks." "You've been spotted?" "Only by Trevor. He's holding his juice box like a weapon." Molly grabbed his elbow. "Then we move! Presents are wrapped in gold near the fireplace." "How do you see them?" "I have criminal instincts," Molly snapped. Bill pulled a rope from his backpack. "Climbing is loud. We use the back door after cake. When Trevor sings, we slip inside, grab goods, vanish." "And if Buster knows?" "Buster respects silence and bacon, which I lack." Bill tightened his turtleneck. "So be quiet." Molly nodded. "Quiet heist. You wear the disguise. I handle the van. We split gifts, and never speak of this." "Perfect." He adjusted the red nose. "I'll tell Trevor I'm here for magic." "You don't know magic." "I know distraction," Bill said. "This giraffe changes everything." Inside, a loud song erupted. Molly and Bill moved toward the back garden, her van idling like a guilty conscience. At the door, Bill whispered, "Remember: if anyone asks, we're here for children's entertainment." "And if they ask about the magnets?" "Say it's a mobile honor-student division." Molly opened the door. The living room glowed with wrapping paper and hope. Bill turned, his clown smile dazzling in the dim light. "Let's steal some birthdays, Molly." "It's a birthday party," she corrected. "Then let's steal birthdays," Bill said, stepping inside. They were not experts, but they were ready. The presents waited behind the piñata, and Trevor was preparing to speak. Molly grabbed a toy truck; Bill snatched a plush dragon. Together they fled into the night, leaving only a balloon giraffe as evidence of the greatest children's party heist in history.
