The basement smelled like old balloons and regret. Molly adjusted her black ski mask, purchased from a garage sale labeled Costumes for Grown Men Who Give Up. Bill stood beside her, clutching a napkin blueprint drawn after spying on the party through an aluminum foil telescope. The presents waited under the tree, Bill whispered, though they sat inside his van three blocks away. Thirty-seven of them. Molly nodded. That is a lot of unwrapping. "Do you think they will notice us?" Bill asked. "Kids have eyes like hawks, Molly, but hawks do not wear neon jumpsuits." Molly smirked behind her mask. "Good point. I look like a disco ball." Bill unwrapped a sandwich from a convenience store open since nineteen eighty-seven. He bit it and reconsidered his life choices. "We need a strategy," he said. Molly produced a glittery backpack recovered from a toddler’s car seat. "We slide through the vent, grab the goods, exit before cake," she said. "What if they have a bouncer?" Bill asked. "It is a children’s party," Molly replied. "The bouncer is five. We claim Santa’s auditors." "Santa’s auditors?" Bill asked. "Yes," Molly said. "Paper plate badges." They practiced accents in the rearview mirror. Bill used a serious voice like a man who lost a bet. Molly adopted a cheerful tone like a birthday clown who had witnessed too much. They loaded two pillowcases, one suction cup, and dead flashlights. Bill checked his analog watch, which always read four o’clock. "It is time," he announced. "Are you nervous?" Molly asked. "I am terrified of the cupcakes," Bill said. "We go in together. No funny business." Molly nodded. "I do serious business." They approached through a hedge Molly called aggressively green and judgmental. The front door yawned open in a crime of hospitality. Inside, frosting and innocence filled the air. Balloons bumped against the ceiling like hopeful souls. "Remember," Molly whispered. "We want the presents. Not the emotional growth." Bill nodded, hands trembling, as he reached for the first silver-wrapped gift beneath the tree. It weighed more than a toy should. "Bill, is that—" Molly started. "It is a cursed teddy bear," Bill said. "We can sell it." Molly frowned. "We cannot sell haunted bears." Music swelled and someone sang Happy Birthday with alarming enthusiasm. Bill surveyed the door and the growing pile by his feet. "We have enough to retire," he said. Molly zipped her bag and grinned behind her mask. "Retire to the grocery store?" she asked. "The bakery?" Bill added. "Prison with good snacks?" Molly laughed silently. They sprinted to the vent, conveniently wide for two adults with questionable choices. As they slid into darkness beyond the lawn, Bill glanced back at the party, then at Molly. "Did we do well?" Bill asked. "We did great," Molly said. "Seventeen toys, three cards, and a ceramic unicorn." Bill paused. "Same time next year?" Molly grinned. "Only with a bounce house. I want to rob one." The van engine sighed to life. Molly tossed the unicorn into the back and buckled up. Bill drove past the party where a child blew out candles with bomb-disarming concentration. Neither thief looked back, though Molly waved at a balloon escaping into the night, a silent farewell. The presents were secured, the plan intact, and somewhere a birthday child wondered why the largest gift had vanished. The heist was complete. The bakery stayed open until midnight.
