Molly leaned against the van with her arms crossed and her face in full judgment mode. "Bill, I need to ask you something important before we do this." Bill adjusted his beanie and pulled out a crumpled map. "Shoot." "Are we really breaking into a children's birthday party to steal presents?" Bill nodded with the confidence of a man who had once stolen a toaster from a church bake sale. "Yes. It is a high-value target. Low security, high emotional stakes." Molly sighed and stared at the house. Bright balloons wrapped around the mailbox, a banner that read Happy Birthday Chloe in glittering letters, and a bounce house that looked like it had been built by a man who disliked physics. "The security is a mother with a wine spritzer and a dad in a polo shirt who definitely knows where his knee is." "Exactly," Bill said. "Distraction. They are focused on sugar and chaos. We go through the backyard." "Through the bounce house." "Through the slide, Molly. It is a ladder." "A slide is not a ladder. It is a slide. It is designed for gravity." "I have tested it," Bill said proudly. "I went down it once. I survived." Molly rubbed her temples. "And once inside we are facing how many children? Twelve?" "Maybe thirteen." "Children have eyes. They have loud voices. They have parents who will call the police immediately." "Children are unreliable witnesses," Bill insisted. "One is crying about a piƱata, another is eating his own party hat, and a third is insisting she is a dragon. Who is going to describe us?" "We are talking about stealing gifts from kids." "We are talking about redistribution of wealth," Bill corrected. "These children have too many toys. I saw one earlier with a price tag still on it. Dusty. Unused. It was a taxidermied bear." "That was decorative." "It was overstock." Molly glanced at her watch. "The party started an hour ago." "Perfect," Bill said. "Cake is being served. Parents are melting down over the sugar rush. Our window is open." "We are going to prison," Molly said. "We are going to be heroes of the black market," Bill said, pushing open a flap of the wooden fence. "Follow me. And remember, stay low, avoid eye contact with anyone named Chloe, and if anyone asks, we are entertainment." They crept toward the patio, where the gift table glowed under a string of lights. Present upon present sat stacked in shiny paper, ribbons, and bows. Molly stopped near the patio steps and pointed. "Bill, there is a dog." "I see it," Bill said. "Golden retriever. Named Muffin." "Muffin is looking at us." "I have dog treats in my pocket. No, I have a mint. I will trade." They moved past Muffin, and Molly whispered, "This plan is madness." "Madness is just genius with a different hat," Bill whispered back. Bill grabbed a gift bag. "One down." Molly grabbed three. "Three down. But Bill, there is a child staring at us." "Which one?" "The one with the crown." "Ignore the crown," Bill whispered. "Focus on the presents. The sack is almost full." Molly kept filling the sack until she froze. "Bill, the bounce house is on fire." "Not literally," Bill said. "The clown has a smoke machine because he thinks it makes the party dramatic." "We need to leave now," Molly whispered. "We are almost to the fence," Bill said. Just as they reached the fence, a loud voice called out from the door. "Hey! You with the bag!" Bill turned slowly, holding out the sack like a white flag. "We are... entertainment." "There is no entertainment listed," the voice said. Bill glanced at Molly, who glanced at the sack, then at the crown, then at the clown who appeared to be judging their life choices. "We are the surprise act," Molly said, her voice steady. "We have gifts for everyone." The child with the crown blinked. "Really?" Bill nodded with a guilty but hopeful expression. "Yes. But we need to put them back because of... tax reasons." The voice softened. "Oh. Okay." They returned the gifts, then scaled the fence with a speed born of pure panic. Bill said over his shoulder, "Next time, we go for the cupcakes." Molly landed in the grass and said, "Next time, we stay in bed." They walked back to the van in silence, leaving only footprints and one very confused clown behind.
