Bill adjusted his black turtleneck and stared at the glittering party invitation pinned to the refrigerator door. The sun glinted off silver streamers lining the neighbor's yard, and for a moment he considered the profound moral weight of stealing from children. "Molly, I have second thoughts." "Second thoughts are for people who haven't already bribed the clown," Molly said, smoothing her sequined gloves with theatrical precision. "It's a children's party," Bill said, clutching his bag of lockpicks that looked suspiciously like a set of plastic spoons. "The security is a four-year-old with a juice box." "The juice box is a decoy," Molly said, pointing at the suburban house with its tragic overconfidence. "The real bouncer is a Labrador with a bow tie. We go through the garage." "I don't want to sound like a chipmunk near the helium tank," Bill muttered. "We don't touch the balloons," Molly said. "The presents are stacked inside like a glittering mountain of regret." Bill nodded, though his eyes kept drifting toward a child on a tricycle wearing a glittering crown. "What if they catch us? I don't want to be the reason little Timmy cries into his cupcake." "Molly and Bill never get caught," she said, her hair sparkling in the sunlight. "We take them all, even Aunt Carol's gift." They approached the fence. Bill tried to climb it and immediately got his cape caught on a rusted nail. "This cape is a liability." "It's a statement of intent," Molly said, unhooking him and tossing her grappling hook, which turned out to be a rope of licorice. "We're in." Inside, they crept past tables of juice and a buffet of dinosaur cookies. The air smelled of frosting and anxiety. Molly pointed toward a glowing tree in the corner. "The presents are under it." Bill stared at a toddler clutching a wrapped train. "That one is clearly the crown jewel." "We take them all," Molly said. "Even the one with too much tape." Bill hesitated, his conscience stirring like a bad cough. "Think of the tears." "The tears fund our yacht," Molly said. They loaded sacks with toys. A train clattered to the floor. Bill froze. "Did you hear that?" "It's just a music box," Molly whispered. "No, it's a child," Bill said, his heart hammering. "A child with excellent taste in jazz standards," Molly corrected. Bill stuffed a teddy bear into his sack. "I feel like a monster." "We are monsters with excellent hair," Molly said. The door opened. A woman in a party hat peered inside, holding a plate of cupcakes. "Are you the entertainment?" "We're the entertainment," Molly said smoothly. "We're the surprise act," Bill added, holding up a sack of stolen presents. "Part of the show." The woman blinked. "Oh. I forgot the magician was coming." "We make the presents disappear," Molly said. Bill backed out, snagging a balloon on his way. "Wait. The presents are in the sacks. The sacks are in the car. The car is on the street." "We have a retirement to fund," Molly said, dragging him through the door as confusion lingered like cheap perfume. "Lead with confidence." Bill paused on the lawn, clutching the sacks, and looked back at the glowing windows. "Molly, I just realized something." "That we forgot the cake?" "No. That I actually kind of like children." "Then this was a terrible career choice for both of us," Molly said. "Yet here we are," Bill said, "with the presents and our dignity, such as it is." They walked away, sacks swinging, as a defeated balloon floated after them, caught in the breeze of their poor planning.
