The van smelled like burnt coffee and regret. Molly, a wiry woman with eyes that missed nothing, was hunched over a blueprint of a suburban backyard. Bill, a large man with the general demeanor of a confused bear, was trying to lick a smear of jelly off his own elbow. “Okay, run it by me again,” Molly said, tapping the paper with a pen. “From the top. And this time, try to focus on the part where you don’t get us arrested.” Bill sat up, cracking his knuckles. “Right. So, it’s Danny’s seventh birthday. The party is at the ‘Bouncy Castle Kingdom’ on Maple Street. The parents, per the invite we intercepted, are ‘asking for the gift of presence, not presents.’ So all the actual loot—the real presents—will be stashed in the back of the parents’ minivan.” “And how do we get into the van?” Molly asked, her tone flat. “Through the door,” Bill said, with the triumphant air of a man who just solved a riddle. Molly stared at him. “The door. To the van. In the middle of a party with thirty screaming children and their hawk-eyed mothers. We just… open the door?” “Not just open it,” Bill said, waggling a finger. “We will be opening it as ‘Clownvis.’ The King of Fun.” He gestured to a bright red, sequined jumpsuit hanging in the back of the van. It had a fake pompadour wig attached to the collar. “Clownvis? We discussed this. The cover is ‘Rent-a-Rat’ Pest Control. We go in, we say, ‘Ma’am, you have a rat problem,’ and they’re so horrified they let us wander anywhere.” “But that’s not fun, Molls. Clownvis is fun. The kids would love him. I’ve been practicing my balloon animals.” He pulled a long, twisted piece of rubber from his pocket. It was a lumpy, vaguely canine shape. “It’s a poodle.” “It looks like a kidney,” Molly said flatly. “You’re not seeing the vision!” Just then, the van’s window was rapped on. A small face, smeared with chocolate, peered in. It was a boy, about six, with a gap-toothed grin. “Are you Clownvis?” the kid asked, his voice muffled by the glass. Bill’s face lit up. “That’s me, little dude! The King! Wanna see a magic trick?” The kid nodded eagerly. Bill rolled down the window. “Okay, I’m gonna make this here kidney… I mean poodle… disappear! Abracadabra!” He shoved the balloon behind his back. The kid’s grin vanished. He pointed a sticky finger at Molly. “You’re a mean lady.” “I’m a professional,” Molly snapped. “My mom says the only thing a clown is good for is making you laugh or scaring you half to death,” the kid said, then turned and ran back toward the bouncy castle, shouting, “There’s a weird clown with a kidney in the van!” A woman in a sundress, a look of steel in her eyes, started marching towards them. “You blew it, Bill,” Molly hissed, slamming the blueprint shut. “We gotta go. Now.” “But the presents!” Bill whined. “Forget the presents, forget the birthday. The only thing we’re stealing now is our freedom!” She threw the van into reverse. As they screeched out of the cul-de-sac, Bill sighed, staring at his destroyed balloon. “I guess the magic wasn’t there,” he said, miserably. Molly just groaned, pressing her forehead against the steering wheel. “I need a new partner. I need a partner who doesn’t want to be a children’s entertainer.” “Immortalize me, Molls,” Bill said. “In a song. A sad, bluesy song.” “I’ll write it in crayon, Bill,” she said, her voice dripping with defeat. “I’ll write it for you on a paper plate.”
