The rain had turned the cul-de-sac into a sticky mirror, and Molly crouched on the curb with a grocery bag full of stolen good intentions. Across the street the Hendersons garage was open for a six year old birthday, pink streamers sagging in the drizzle, a table covered in gifts that looked like small wrapped crimes. Bill arrived late wheezing with a stroller he had spray painted matte black. He parked it behind the recycling bins and checked his watch. Molly tapped the bag. It contained a plastic tiara, a bouncy castle patch kit, and a voucher for free entry at Chuck E Cheese. The disguise. Molly said the mother was a former Girl Scout and would be hyper vigilant about allergies and sugar intake. Bill said that was perfect. He liked mothers who kept clipboards. The plan was simple. The party was outdoors because the Hendersons thought fresh air was healthy. The presents were on a card table near the hedge. The kids would be distracted by a piñata shaped like a dinosaur that someone had already punctured. The adults would be inside drinking lukewarm wine and arguing about school zoning. Molly pulled the tiara from the bag and set it on her head. It was slightly too small and pinched. Bill offered her a paper crown from a Happy Meal. She declined. We go in when the dinosaur falls, she said. The kids will scream. The adults will blame the wind. You grab the left side, I grab the right. No one looks at presents when a child is crying about a lost arm. Bill adjusted his fake mustache in the stroller mirror. It kept sliding off his upper lip. He said it was a good plan except for one thing. Molly asked what. He said he was allergic to glitter. She laughed and told him to hold his breath. He told her to hold her breath too because the presents smelled like new plastic and parental guilt. She said that was the point. A mother emerged with a tray of cupcakes and paused to scold a Labrador for drinking from the kiddie pool. Bill pushed the stroller forward, the wheels squeaking in perfect rhythm with the birthday music. Molly walked beside him in too big sneakers, waving at a small boy who was solemnly feeding a goat piñata. Inside the garage the air was warm with pizza and disappointment. Molly ducked behind the gift table just as Timmy shouted that the dinosaur had an accident. Chaos erupted. Bill lifted the stroller basket and began sliding presents inside like a very bad magician. Molly worked the other side, whispering apologies to each box as if it were a hostage. A father stepped out with a phone flashlight. Bill froze. Molly whispered to be a balloon. The father stared at the stroller, at the tiara, at the pile of gifts growing in the basket. He blinked and went back inside to find the camera. By the time the piñata was cleared away the table was empty except for a single unwrapped action figure and a thank you note. Molly and Bill melted back into the rain, stroller groaning, bag overflowing, both soaked and triumphant. Bill said we should have taken the cake. Molly said the cake was a lie and besides they had presents. He said next time we hit a wedding. She said fine but only if the presents were still wrapped.
