“Before we begin,” Molly whispered, crouched behind a hedge, “I want it understood that this is a precision operation.” Bill peered over the hedge. “You’re wearing a tutu.” “It’s camouflage.” “For a children’s party?” “Exactly. No one suspects a ballerina.” Across the garden, balloons bobbed above a fence. A banner read HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LEO! Beneath it sat a mountain of wrapped presents, guarded by a woman in a paper crown and a small dog wearing a cape. Bill lowered his binoculars. “The dog’s the lookout.” “The dog is a spaniel.” “Spaniels are famously suspicious.” “So are you, and I still brought you.” Bill checked the sketch of the garden. “We go through the side gate, distract the adults, and carry the presents out in the laundry basket.” “What side gate?” He pointed. “There.” “That’s a trellis.” “It leads to the side.” “It leads to the roof.” “From the roof, we can access the side.” Molly sighed. “This is why I draw the maps.” She produced a crayon plan from her pocket. It showed the garden, the house, and a smiling sun wearing sunglasses. Bill studied it. “Why is the dog drawn as a dragon?” “Artistic license.” “And why are we drawn holding hands?” “Teamwork.” They crept toward the gate. Bill jiggled the latch. It squeaked. From the party, a child shouted, “Someone’s at the gate!” Molly grabbed Bill by the collar and pulled him behind a compost bin. “Act natural,” she whispered. “I’m hiding in compost.” “Then look composty.” A little girl appeared at the gate. “Are you the magician?” Bill glanced at Molly. “Of course we are,” Molly said. “I’m Molly the Magnificent, and this is Bill the—” “Assistant,” Bill said. “Disappearing assistant,” Molly corrected. The girl opened the gate. “Can you make my uncle disappear?” “Only temporarily,” Bill said. “He’d come back for cake.” The girl led them toward the presents. Molly’s eyes gleamed. Bill’s did too, though he was watching the cake table. “Focus,” Molly murmured. “I am focused. That cake has six layers.” “Those are presents.” “Then I’m focused on the presents.” The paper-crowned woman approached. “Who are you?” “Entertainers,” Molly said, lifting her tutu’s tulle like a magician’s cape. “Then entertain,” the woman said. Molly produced a coin from behind the woman’s ear. The children gasped. Bill produced a second coin from behind his own ear and yelped. “Your ears are very profitable,” the girl said. “Thank you,” Bill replied. “They’re insured.” While Molly performed a trick with three plastic cups and one very confused rabbit, Bill edged toward the presents. “Not that way,” Molly called. “I’m helping.” “You’re carrying a gift bag.” “It was unattended.” “It has a name tag.” Bill read it. “To Leo. From Auntie Pam. I was going to return it.” The dog barked. Bill froze. Molly swept over, bowing dramatically. “And now, for my greatest trick: the entire audience will close their eyes.” “Why?” asked the crowned woman. “Because the next trick is extremely bright.” Everyone squeezed their eyes shut. Molly grabbed Bill’s sleeve and steered him toward the gate. “Where are the presents?” Bill whispered. “Still here.” “But the plan—” “Has changed. We’re stealing the cake.” They slipped out carrying the six-layer cake, which toppled slightly but remained, by some miracle, upright. Behind them, the children cheered. “Best magician ever!” one shouted. Bill grinned. “We should do children’s parties more often.” Molly balanced the cake. “Only if we stop stealing from children.” “Agreed. We’ll steal from their parents.” “That’s worse.” “But they have better presents.”
