The van smelled of cold pizza and bad decisions. Molly peered over the dashboard at the house across the street, where balloons bobbed from a mailbox shaped like a duck. "Okay," she said, unrolling a diagram she'd drawn on the back of a Chinese takeout menu. "This is the plan. We go in as clowns." Bill lowered his binoculars. "I'm not wearing the clown suit again. Last time a kid bit me." "That was a chihuahua, Bill." "It had a bow in its hair. How was I supposed to know?" "By the teeth. Dogs have very distinctive teeth." Molly jabbed the diagram with a pen. "Focus. There are thirty presents in that living room. I counted them through the window this morning while you were asleep in a hammock you stole from a yard." "Borrowed," Bill said. "I left a note." "A note that said 'thanks, this is mine now.'" "That's still a note." He took the diagram and squinted at it. "Why is there a drawing of a dragon on here?" "That's the duck mailbox. I was rushed." Bill studied the house. Streamers hung in the windows. Somewhere inside, a dozen children were shrieking with the intensity of tiny, sugar-fueled banshees. "Molly, I have concerns. Children are the worst kind of witnesses. They notice everything. One time a kid clocked me at a mall because I was wearing two different shoes." "Were you?" "Yes, but that's not the point. The point is they're observant little monsters." "That's why we're clowns." Molly pulled two rubber noses from her bag and tossed him one. "Clowns are invisible. Nobody looks at a clown's shoes. They look at the nose and they panic." "I panic," Bill muttered, catching his. "Every time." The plan, such as it was, went like this: they would enter through the side gate, perform a tight five-minute routine for the party, and while Molly made balloon animals, Bill would load presents through the kitchen window into a wheelbarrow. "A wheelbarrow," Bill said flatly. "It's quiet." "It's a wheelbarrow, Molly. In a kitchen. During a party." "Nobody notices a wheelbarrow. It's basically a shopping cart with better posture." He rubbed his temples. "Fine. Fine. But if a chihuahua comes at me, I'm using the wheelbarrow as a shield." "Deal. Now put on your nose." Bill stared at the rubber nose like it had personally wronged him. "You know what I miss? Bank jobs. Banks have laser grids, guards, dignity. Kids have sticky hands and no sense of mercy." "Dignity," Molly repeated, watching him wedge the squeaking nose onto his face. "You slept in a stolen hammock." "Borrowed." They climbed out of the van. Bill stumbled immediately, tripping over the enormous shoes Molly had insisted he wear. A squeak rang out with every step, echoing down the quiet suburban street like a dying accordion. "Subtle," Molly whispered. "You said nobody notices clowns." "Nobody notices one clown. Two clowns squeaking in unison is a parade." They reached the side gate. Beyond it, they could hear the party in full chaos, a birthday song being screamed rather than sung, the thud of small bodies against furniture. Bill took a deep breath. "If we survive this, I'm retiring." "You said that after the chihuahua." "And I meant it then, too." Molly honked her nose twice, which was their signal for go. It was, everyone later agreed, a terrible signal, because the honking alerted the birthday girl, who appeared at the window holding a cake knife and staring at them with the cold, unblinking focus of a child who had never once been fooled by anything. "Act natural," Bill hissed. He struck a pose. Molly knocked over the wheelbarrow.
