The community center's back room smelled of stale coffee and broken dreams, which Molly found fitting since that's exactly what they were about to steal from a room full of eight-year-olds. Bill sat on an upside-down bucket, studying a crayon-drawn map of the birthday party layout that Molly had "acquired" from a dumpster behind Party City. "There's a bounce house," Bill said, tapping the paper. "How do we get past a bounce house?" "We don't," Molly said, adjusting her tool belt. "We go through the kitchen. I checked the schedule. The pizza arrives at 2:15, which means the parents will all be in the party room watching Timmy Henderson open presents. That's our window." "Timmy Henderson," Bill repeated, as if the name tasted bad. "That's a terrible name for a child." "That's a terrible name for anyone. But it's perfect for us. While they're distracted by whatever unicorn nightmare they've hired, we slip in, grab the gift table, and we're gone before anyone notices the sugar crash." Bill stood up, knocking over his bucket. "You want to steal presents from children, Molly. Actual children. At a party. With cake." "I want to steal presents from parents who spent three hundred dollars on a Saturday afternoon so their kid could scream at a man dressed as a dinosaur. The presents are collateral damage. The real target is the cash envelope from Grandma." "Grandma's always cash." "Grandma's always cash, Bill. That's why we do this." Molly pulled a small device from her pocket, clicking it on. It beeped softly, scanning the walls. "Alarm system is basic. Motion sensors in the hallway, pressure plates under the carpet in the party room. We avoid both by going through the kitchen and the supply closet. I've got a thirty-second window to disable the panel." "Thirty seconds?" "The janitor leaves at two. The party starts at 2:30. We enter at 2:10, move through the kitchen while the caterer sets up, hit the supply closet, and wait. When the pizza arrives, everyone moves. We slip into the party room, load the table into the van, and we're drinking celebratory champagne by 2:45." Bill scratched his chin. "What if a kid sees us?" "Then we hide behind the dinosaur." "The dinosaur's in the party room." "Then we hide behind the cake. Or we improvise, Bill. We've stolen from a casino, a yacht, and a guy's house while he was in the shower. A children's party is just another Tuesday." "Those were adults, Molly. This is different." "Is it? They're all just people with things we want. The only difference is the dinosaur costume and the juice boxes." Bill was quiet for a moment. Then he laughed, a short bark that surprised them both. "You're right. It's just another job. We're professionals." "We're thieves, Bill. There's a difference." "Not to the police." Molly smiled, checking her watch. "Not to the police. Now, you want to review the escape route one more time, or are you ready to steal from Timmy Henderson?" Bill stood up straight, adjusting his collar. "I was born ready. My mother stole my Halloween candy when I was six. I've been training for this my whole life." "That's not training, that's trauma." "Same thing, really." They shook hands, the way they always did before a job. Through the thin wall, they could hear the party room filling with the sounds of excited children, the squeak of balloons being inflated, the distant promise of presents waiting to be opened. Molly grabbed her bag. "Kitchen first. Remember, no sudden movements, no eye contact with the children, and absolutely no eating the cake. I mean it, Bill. Last time you got distracted by dessert, we almost got caught by a mall security guard." "I was hungry." "You were reckless." "Same thing, really." They slipped out into the hallway, moving with the practiced silence of people who had spent years taking things that didn't belong to them. Ahead, the kitchen door waited, and beyond it, a room full of wrapped boxes and the sweet, terrible temptation of easy money. Molly turned to Bill, grinning. "Let's go steal some birthday presents." "For the children," Bill added, as if that made it better. "For us," Molly corrected. "Always for us." They moved forward together, into the fluorescent light and the promise of a very good Saturday.
