The community center basement smelled like stale juice boxes and broken dreams. Molly spread a hand-drawn map across a folding table while Bill chewed on a pencil, his eyes narrowed in concentration. "So you're saying we go in through the supply closet?" Bill asked. "Through the supply closet," Molly confirmed, tapping the map with her manicured finger. "The birthday boy's uncle works there. He leaves the door unlocked for 'inventory.'" "Inventory of what?" "Juice boxes. Mostly juice boxes." Bill set down his pencil. "Molly, we're stealing presents from children." "We're stealing presents from children who don't deserve them." "How do we know they don't deserve them?" Molly leaned forward, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Timmy Henderson. Seven years old. Last month, he told his entire class that Santa isn't real. In front of my niece." Bill's jaw tightened. "That's unforgivable." "Exactly. And his party is Saturday. Forty kids. Forty presents. Minimum." Bill studied the map, his expression softening into something almost thoughtful. "What's our exit strategy?" "The bounce house." "The bounce house?" "It's inflatable. We can deflate it, creating a diversion. Parents will be too busy rescuing their children to notice two adults in party hats slipping out with garbage bags full of LEGO." Bill nodded slowly, impressed. "You've thought of everything." "I have a binder." "Of course you do." Molly pulled a three-ring binder from her purse, its spine cracked with age. "Tab three: 'Distraction Techniques.' Tab seven: 'Emergency Cake Protocols.'" "What are emergency cake protocols?" "If we're discovered, we eat the cake. It buys us thirty seconds. People don't attack someone eating cake. It's socially unacceptable." Bill considered this. "What if they have a gluten-free cake?" "Then we're dead, Bill. We're dead." A sudden crash echoed from upstairs, followed by the sound of children screaming with delight. Both thieves froze. "That's the magician," Molly said, relaxing. "He's already here. We need to move." Bill gathered his pencil and map. "Molly, one more thing. The presents. How do we know which ones are good?" Molly smiled, the smile of a woman who had planned for every contingency. "I have a scanner. It reads barcodes. Anything over fifty dollars, we take. Anything under, we leave for the other children." "That's almost noble." "I'm a professional, Bill. Professionals have ethics." They stood, adjusting their party hats. Molly's read "BIRTHDAY GIRL" in glitter letters. Bill's said "WORLD'S BEST UNCLE," which he had purchased specifically for this occasion. "Remember," Molly said, checking her watch, "we go in at 2:15. The pinata starts at 2:30. We have fifteen minutes." "And if we get caught?" Molly shrugged. "Then we claim we're with the entertainment company. I have a fake business card." "What does it say?" "'Bill and Molly's Magical Moments.' We do children's parties on weekends." Bill looked at her, really looked at her, and something like respect flickered in his eyes. "You're terrifying, Molly." "I'm thorough." She extended her hand. "Partners?" Bill shook it. "Partners." They walked toward the stairs, two thieves in glittering party hats, ready to commit the most heinous crime of all: stealing joy from a child who had committed the greater sin of ruining Christmas for everyone else. The basement door clicked shut behind them. Somewhere above, a small child began to cry. Molly and Bill smiled. It was going to be a good heist.
