The party was three hours away and Molly was already sweating through her clown costume. "This is a terrible idea," she said, adjusting her rainbow wig in the reflection of a parked minivan. "I have a degree in accounting, Bill. I could be doing spreadsheets right now. Spreadsheets don't involve face paint." Bill checked his watch for the fourth time. "The Henderson kid's turning eight. His parents are loaded. We're talking about a Nintendo, Molly. A whole Nintendo." "He's eight. He probably wants a pony." "He wants whatever we can carry." Bill pulled a floor plan from his jacket. "I've mapped the house. Kitchen entrance, thirty seconds to the gift table, out through the dog door. The dog's a pug. I've seen scarier things in my bathtub." Molly pinched the bridge of her nose. "You've seen scarier things in your bathtub?" "Don't judge me." "We're going to a child's birthday party, Bill. As clowns. Actual clowns. Do you know what children do to clowns?" "They laugh?" "They scream. They cry. They tell their parents you touched them." Molly gestured at her costume. "This is polyester, Bill. I'm going to smell like regret and cotton candy for a week." Bill grinned, showing the gap where he'd lost a tooth to a frozen hot dog in 2019. "Think of the haul. The Hendersons have a pool. A pool, Molly. We could be swimming in stolen Lego by midnight." "Lego is not currency." "Everything's currency if you find the right buyer." Bill tapped the floor plan. "The mother works from home. She'll be in her office. The father's golfing. We have a window." "Children, Bill. There will be children. Dozens of them. They have no concept of personal space. They will touch us." "That's why we wear the costumes." Bill stood, striking a heroic pose that immediately knocked over a recycling bin. "Molly. Molly, look at me. We are professionals. Last month we stole a parking meter. A parking meter, Molly. We are unstoppable." "You got a hernia." "I got a parking meter and a hernia. The hernia was a bonus." Bill helped her up, brushing leaves from her wig. "The Henderson kid invited twenty children. Twenty. That's twenty presents minimum. Maybe thirty. Think of the resale value." Molly stared at the suburban street, at the houses with their tidy lawns and their unlocked dreams. "I hate this." "You love this." Bill squeezed her shoulder. "You love the planning. You love the costumes. You love that we're going to do something stupid and probably illegal and definitely memorable." "I love that we're going to get caught and I'm going to explain to a judge why a thirty-four-year-old woman was dressed as a clown at a child's party." "Then don't get caught." Bill checked his watch again. "Two hours. We enter through the kitchen. I create a distraction—maybe a fake balloon animal emergency—and you hit the gift table. Thirty seconds. Out the dog door. We're gone before anyone knows we were there." "And if the pug bites me?" "Then you bite back. You're a clown, Molly. Act like one." Molly looked at her reflection again, at the painted smile that didn't reach her eyes. Somewhere in this ridiculous wig, in this ridiculous life, she'd found something she didn't know she was looking for. "Fine," she said. "But if I get arrested, you're explaining the hernia to the judge." "Deal." Bill extended his hand, still covered in clown makeup from a practice run. "Partners?" Molly shook it. "Partners." The minivan's engine turned over, and they drove toward the suburbs, toward the presents, toward whatever came next.
