The warehouse smelled like rust and broken dreams, which Molly found fitting since she'd been dreaming about this job for three weeks. Bill sat on an upturned milk crate, sharpening a butter knife with the dedication of a man who had clearly never owned a proper weapon. "You're going to stab a child with that?" Molly asked. "I'm going to threaten a child with that. There's a difference. The blade's mostly for show. The fear does the work." Molly tossed him a granola bar. "The party's at four. Mrs. Henderson's grandson turns seven. Fifty kids, minimum. We need to be in and out before the cake." "Or during the cake. Think about it. Everyone's distracted. Sugar high. Parents drinking coffee in the kitchen. We walk in with a helium tank, grab the gift table, float out like angels." "Float out like angels with forty pounds of Lego sets?" "Lego floats, Molly. It's science." She sat beside him, pulling out her phone. "Here's the floor plan. Kitchen's here, living room's here, and the presents are stacked by the fireplace because Mrs. Henderson 'wants them to look festive.'" "Festive. Right." Bill pocketed the butter knife. "What's our cover?" "We're clowns." "We are absolutely not clowns." "We're entertainers. Face paint, big shoes, the whole thing. I already bought the supplies." "You bought clown supplies." "I bought entertainment supplies. There's a difference. The kids will love us. The parents will be suspicious. That's when we strike." Bill stood up, pacing like a man rehearsing a speech he didn't believe in. "What if there's a security system? What if Mrs. Henderson hired a guard? What if one of those kids has a karate black belt?" "Then we improvise. That's what we do, Bill. We improvise. Remember the museum?" "We got caught." "We got caught because you insisted on wearing the night guard's uniform over your clothes. You looked like a night guard who'd been attacked by a night guard." "He was my size! It was perfect!" "It was not perfect. We spent six hours in a supply closet while the actual guard ate our sandwiches." Molly laughed, the sound echoing off the concrete walls. "We're going to do this. No uniforms. No sandwiches. Just presents." "How many presents are we talking about?" "Seventy-three, according to the registry. Mrs. Henderson went all out. Remote control cars, a dollhouse, one of those robot dogs that does backflips." "Robot dogs are worth money?" "Everything's worth money if you know who to sell it to. I know a guy." "Your guy is a pawn shop in Newark." "My guy is a pawn shop in Newark who owes me a favor. There's a difference." Bill sat back down, suddenly serious. "Molly. What if we get caught?" "Then we go to jail. Same as every other job." "This is different. It's kids, Molly. Their birthday. Their one day." Molly was quiet for a moment. Outside, a siren wailed and faded. "My little brother's birthday, I got a chemistry set. Blew up the garage. My mom cried. My dad laughed. Best day of my life." She stood up, brushing dust from her jeans. "We're not hurting anyone. We're taking things that can be replaced. Insurance covers it. The kids get new presents next year." "That's what you tell yourself." "I tell myself the truth. Now help me practice my clown laugh." "Why?" "Because if we're doing this, we're committing. Full commitment. Terrifying children with our presence. I want to hear it. The laugh." Bill stood, cleared his throat, and produced a sound that was somewhere between a seal barking and a teakettle screaming. Molly clapped slowly. "Again. But scarier." "This is my scary laugh." "Then we're doomed." "Then we're doomed together." Bill grinned, butter knife glinting. "Four o'clock, Molly. Party time." "Party time," she agreed. And somewhere in the city, a seven-year-old boy was counting down the hours until his presents arrived, never knowing that two strangers were already planning to ruin everything.
