The party store's fluorescent lights hummed overhead as Molly spread a hand-drawn map across the counter. Bill leaned in, his coffee growing cold. "So you're telling me," Bill said, "that we dress as clowns." "I'm telling you we dress as clowns," Molly corrected, tapping the map. "Specifically, the clowns from the party package. The parents will be too busy drinking boxed wine to notice." "And the children?" "Children love clowns, Bill. It's science." Bill scratched his chin. "What about the magician? There's a magician booked for two o'clock." "Kevin the Amazing? I looked him up. He does balloon animals and one disappearing coin trick. I could do better with a deck of cards and a YouTube tutorial." "But we're not magicians. We're clowns." "Exactly. We're the entertainment. We arrive early, set up our 'station,' and wait for the gift table to be abandoned during the cake ceremony." Bill nodded slowly. "The cake ceremony. When they sing happy birthday and the kid blows out candles." "Precisely. Thirty seconds of distraction. Maybe forty-five if little Tyler has trouble with the number seven candle." "And the presents?" "Stacked by the door. Unattended. Beautifully wrapped. Probably containing LEGO sets, art supplies, and at least one tablet based on the registry I 'borrowed' from the party planner's clipboard." Bill finally picked up his coffee, taking a sip. "Molly, last month we hit a retirement home. A retirement home. We stole a walker and seventeen Werther's Originals." "That was a different operation. Different skill set." "What skill set does this require? Face paint?" Molly pulled a small notebook from her jacket. "I've been practicing. The nose, the wig, the oversized shoes. I can juggle now. Three balls. Sometimes four, but three consistently." "Juggling?" "Parents respect juggling, Bill. It establishes credibility." Bill set down his coffee. "What are our clown names?" Molly smiled. "I'm Bozo. You're... uh..." "Not Bozo." "You're not Bozo. You're the other one. The sad one." "Billbo?" "Billbo works. Billbo the Melancholy. You wear the tear on your cheek, the droopy mustache. Very avant-garde." "And you're Bozo. The happy one. The leader." "Naturally. I have the leadership face." They stood in silence for a moment, the hum of the lights filling the space between them. "What if we get caught?" Bill asked finally. Molly shrugged. "Then we do the balloon animal thing. Buy ourselves time. 'Oh no, officer, we're just here for the party! Look, a giraffe!'" "And if the officer doesn't like giraffes?" "Then we make a dog. Everyone likes dogs." Bill considered this. "The getaway vehicle?" "My van. Parked around the corner. I've disabled the party's security system already. The code was 'birthday2024.' Predictable." "And after?" Molly's eyes gleamed. "After, we open everything in the van. We keep what we want. We fence the rest. Split fifty-fifty, as always." "As always," Bill agreed. They shook on it, Molly's hand still dusted with practice face paint. Outside, a child's birthday party was beginning somewhere in the neighborhood, balloons and cake and presents waiting to be liberated by two thieves who had finally found their calling. "One more thing," Molly said, gathering her map. "The piñata." Bill groaned. "No." "The piñata, Bill. It's tradition. It's expected. We have to hit it." "We are not hitting a piñata full of candy and cheap toys. That's amateur hour." "Then you're not coming," Molly said simply. "I'll find someone else. Someone who understands the art of the heist." Bill stared at her. "You'd really replace me over a piñata?" "I would replace you over anything, Bill. That's what makes us partners." He thought about this. Then he laughed, a genuine sound that surprised them both. "Fine. Piñata. But I'm taking the good candy. The chocolate." "Obviously. I'm not a monster." They walked out into the afternoon, two clowns in street clothes, already becoming something else entirely. Somewhere, a child was turning seven. Somewhere, presents waited. And somewhere, Molly and Bill were ready to make their entrance, paint and all, ready to steal a birthday and call it art.
