The community center basement smelled like stale juice boxes and desperation. Molly spread a crayon-drawn map across a folding table, her finger tracing a route past the bounce house. Bill leaned against a stack of plastic chairs, arms crossed, studying her with the skepticism of a man who had once tried to rob a Chuck E. Cheese and been chased by a teenager in a rat costume. "We go in through the kitchen," Molly said. "The freezer alarm is busted. I checked." "When?" "Tuesday." "Tuesday you were in jail." "Exactly. Reconnaissance." Bill picked up a juice box from the floor, examined it like evidence. "This is a seven-year-old's birthday party, Molly. Seven. The presents are going to be dinosaur toys and art supplies. Maybe a tablet if we're lucky, but probably not. Probably a dinosaur toy." "There's always a tablet," Molly said. "Parents overcompensate. I've seen the registries. Little Timmy's getting a tablet, a bike, and what I can only assume is a pony." "Timmy doesn't exist. You made him up." "Timmy is a statistical certainty." Bill sat down, finally, and Molly felt the shift in the room, the way he always did this, the way he pretended to resist and then let himself be convinced. She'd been working on him for three weeks. The Chuck E. Cheese incident had nearly ended them. Nearly. "What's the crew?" Bill asked. "Just us. Two people. Less heat." "Two people carrying forty-seven presents out of a building full of screaming children?" "We use the bounce house." Bill stared at her. "The bounce house." "It's an inflatable fortress. We load it up, cut the tether, and float it down the drainage ditch to my van. Nobody suspects a bounce house." "You want to steal a bounce house." "I want to steal the presents inside the bounce house. The bounce house is transportation." Bill was quiet for a long moment. Then he laughed, a short bark that surprised them both. "You're insane." "I'm ambitious." "There's a difference." "Is there?" Molly leaned forward, her voice dropping to the register that had talked him into three jobs he'd sworn he wouldn't touch. "Bill. Think about it. No alarms that work. No security worth mentioning. A target that literally cannot defend itself. Children, Bill. Children. They don't even have object permanence yet. We could walk in there with a wheelbarrow and they'd probably help us load it." Bill stood, walked to the small window, looked out at the parking lot where parents were already arriving with balloons. "The rat," he said finally. "Chuck E. Cheese. You remember the rat." "I remember the taser." "The rat chased me for six minutes. Six minutes, Molly. I have never run that fast in my life, and I once outran a Rottweiler." "That Rottweiler was leashed." "So was the rat, technically. By a minimum-wage teenager." Molly joined him at the window. A minivan pulled up, and three children tumbled out, already screaming about cake. She watched them, these small chaotic creatures, and felt something complicated in her chest. Not guilt. Something adjacent to guilt. Recognition, maybe. She'd been that child once, screaming, certain that joy was permanent and cake was infinite. "Last job," she said. "After this, I'm going straight. I mean it. I'm going to get a job at a library. I'm going to read books to children, Bill. I'm going to be the person who hands out stickers." Bill turned to look at her. "You hate children." "I hate their parents. The children are innocent. That's what makes this beautiful." He was quiet again. Outside, the first child had spotted the bounce house and was already running toward it, shrieking with delight. Bill watched, and Molly saw his face change, some old door opening in him, some memory of his own small chaos. "What time?" he asked. "Six PM. Party starts at four. We go in at five-fifty, during the pizza." "And the bounce house?" "We float it down the ditch at six-thirty. I've already scoped the route. There's a storm drain that empties into Miller's Creek. We meet the van at the bridge." Bill nodded slowly, the way he did when he'd decided. "I'll bring the bolt cutters. And Molly?" "Yeah?" "If a child sees us, I'm blaming you. I'm telling them you're my crazy aunt." "You're not funny." "I'm not trying to be." He smiled, and it was almost the smile he'd given her three years ago, in a different basement, planning a different impossible thing. "I'm trying to be prepared." Molly grabbed her jacket. "Five-fifty. Don't be late." "Wouldn't miss it." He paused at the door. "Molly? The tablet. If there is one. I'm taking it. For research." "For research." "For research." He was gone, and she was alone with the crayon map and the smell of stale juice boxes, and somewhere in the distance, a child began to scream with the particular joy of a birthday party beginning. She smiled, and began to plan.
