The community center smelled like frosting and desperation. Molly spread the blueprints across the folding table, her finger tracing the path from the kitchen entrance to the gift table. Bill leaned over her shoulder, his coffee breath fogging the paper. "So we go in through the back, grab the loot, and we're out before the cake gets cut," Molly said. "There's a cake?" "There's always a cake, Bill. It's a children's party." Bill scratched his chin. "I don't know, Molly. These kids, they're small. They move fast. Unpredictable." "They're five, Bill. Five-year-olds with juice boxes and attention spans shorter than a goldfish's grocery list." "My cousin's kid is five. He once bit a dog." "Was the dog stealing his presents?" "Fair point." Molly tapped the blueprint. "Look, the presents are stacked by the wall near the pin-the-tail station. We hit that, we're golden. Twenty minutes, tops." "And the parents?" "Distracted. Eating cake. Arguing about whose turn it was to bring the goodie bags." She grinned. "We dress as clowns." Bill's eye twitched. "We are not dressing as clowns." "We absolutely are. Nobody questions a clown at a children's party. It's like wearing a disguise made of pure social obligation." "I have a perfectly good ski mask." "Which screams 'felon' to every parent in a three-block radius." Molly pulled a red nose from her pocket and tossed it to him. It landed on his forehead. "Try it on." Bill stared at her. "You brought two." "I come prepared." He placed the nose on his face. It squeaked. "This is humiliating." "You look festive." "This is how I get murdered, Molly. By a father with a juice box and righteous fury." "Then we move fast. No lingering. No balloon animals. We are clowns of efficiency, not artistry." Bill adjusted the nose. "What about the security?" "There is no security. It's a community center. The most dangerous thing in that building is a sugar crash." "And if we get caught?" Molly shrugged. "We say we're the entertainment. Bill, you can juggle, can't you?" "I can juggle three things. Barely. And one of them is usually my dignity." "Perfect. Three presents. In and out." Bill stood, the red nose still perched on his face, and extended his hand. "Partners?" Molly shook it. "Partners." "One condition." "Name it." "No cake. I don't want cake. If I eat cake, I get sleepy. If I get sleepy, I get caught. If I get caught, I explain to a judge why two adults in clown makeup robbed a birthday party." "Deal." Molly grabbed her bag. "Meet at the dumpster behind the center at two. We go in at 2:15, right when the pin-the-tail game starts." "And if there's no pin-the-tail game?" "Then we improvise. We've improvised before." "We've failed before." "We've failed and learned. That's called experience, Bill." Bill removed the nose and tucked it into his jacket. "I still think the ski mask was better." "You still think a lot of things, Bill. Most of them wrong." She turned toward the door, then paused. "Hey. Bring the big bag. The one that says 'THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING.' Irony is our friend." "Our only friend, maybe." Molly smiled, already halfway to the parking lot, where their van waited with its engine running and its moral compass permanently parked in neutral.
